LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
November 2001
With it's well chosen assortment of deep green trees and a few color ones it is a very attractive course, he also put in dashes of color by having just a few flower beds to take away any drabness and to make this whole course a very inviting one. With the mowed fairways the playing surface matched the rest of this attractive course. His choice of color for the bay was an excellent light blue and finally looked like water.
Both the elevation and the caddie proved to be excellent which would prove to be very important to the success of this course. The first 7 holes proved to be very uneventful and quite common, a great disappointment to me. Then Sean's evil twin took over the design of the course and it began to more than live up to its hype. He had strategically placed bunkers and wildgrass on the fairways, the elevation varied down off of the tees and up to the greens. The greens, they were slightly sloped tiered and elevated, he started to add good stuff to the course, why not start that way. To write descriptions of all of these interesting holes would be too much so here is just a sampling of both the early and later holes.
1st hole, par 4, 330y, with a 29.7' drop, I can't find any reason not to cut across this hole and start the game with an eagle, even with the slight slope in this green it can be done.
5th hole, par 5, 525y with a 15.7' drop, fortunately for you the bunkers on the fairway are supposed to be hazards but these bunkers that are blocking the fairway can be cleared without a problem. My drive went 299y downrange and left me with a 209y approach to the flag with a 27.9' elevation, even though the green was very well guarded it was quite accessible with a 2 iron adjusted for length. It took me into eagle range.
7th hole par 3, 233y, with a 19.2' drop, l lowered the trajectory on my 2 1ron and had a perfect shot; a flop 3w would have been too much club.
14th hole par 3, 202y with a 37.7' drop, where did this hole surrounded by desert sand and Suharto cactus come from. I used a 5 iron adjusted for length to keep the sand out of my shoes.
As I told you this course became very challenging and interesting for more than ten holes, and it was worth it. The fairways were littered with either well placed bunkers or large fields of wildgrass they were all avoidable if you took the time to plan your shots. The greens became very interesting with the slight slopes and tiers that made for fascinating breaks. I hit a few fairways that were slightly crowned but that was part of the fun. Unfortunately the whole course was not like this, it was more than playable but a 53mb download might put 56k'ers off and I can't blame them. If you have the time to download this course you will enjoy it, I know I did. Yes I do recommend it and hope you enjoy the back nine. Because of the average opening holes giving you a half a course I can't give it a high score for a challenging game but playability is a given.
