LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Osgood National (Memorial Course) by Scott Osgood
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
March 2002
This course was released shortly after 9-11 and renamed 'memorial course' with the U.S. flag on all the pins. The color combination was very good but the fairways were flat looking, he used green brush amongst the heavy rough and the undergrowth made this heavily planted course look even better. The understated use of color trees, and the decorations both in and around the water hazards added still more to its natural look. Both brown and white sand was used in the traps it didn't look bad but I fail to see the point in over decorating just for the sake of using it because its available. Unfortunately he used Whistlers Mountain, I hope it will be recalled soon as it's become a hazard to the eyes. With all of the water hazards there has to be a stream somewhere and it surfaces in all its glory on hole 16, it's easy to avoid but nice to look at. Both pleasant and interesting sounds were used and made for an interesting diversion.
The elevation and the caddie setting were impeccable. His holes had many varied and interesting shapes, which kept my interest up throughout the round. The fairways were just a shade under medium but the greens were on the small side. They were both tiered and sloped and more medium in play than easy, but he didn't 'go off the deep end' with the difficulty of them. The greens were very heavily guarded and usually had a narrow entry, which would only affect you on chip shots. The number 2 hole had a tree on the right that caused me to either go to the left side of the fairway or to move my ball on the tee to insure a clean drive.
#4 hole, par 5, 574y, hang around the tee area for a while and tell me if you hear what I hear. This is a long narrow dogleg right but a safe drive of 288y left me with only 249 to the heavily guarded small green. A 3w.251y.on the green, and an eagle. I wont be trying that again.
#8 hole par 4, 410y, the trees block your view but I just placed my aiming stick down the fairway and easily cleared them, 284y. With 129y and a 9 iron a birdie is a given on the flat green.
This is another, and the last, course that fell through the cracks and didn't have a chance at a timely review. An unfortunate circumstance since it is a very entertaining and enjoyable course to play. His hole shapes, bunker and water hazard placements, and the small but hittable greens made this both an interesting and a bit of a challenging course to play. He gave us an interesting course to add to our ever growing collection of very playable courses and even at the size of the download I would recommend it for a sleeper download. I hope he continues to give us courses such as this in the future.
