LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
January 2002
This is an attractive course with its mowed fairways, nice assortment of trees with 'undergrowth' of pine needles, and green brush. He added just enough color to make it very pleasant looking, with the exception of 'the mountain' that we all know and are tired of loving. His treatments around the water hazards looked terrible from a distance but when you were close it turned out to be a good looking rock lining. Consistency in the fringe was lacking, some greens had it others didn't. The fairways were narrow but seemed to be easily hit.
The elevation and the caddie turned out to be one of the best I've run into lately. He didn't use very many hazards on this rather long course, the idea was to make the holes themselves the hazard, a very interesting approach and more often than not it worked, but this too was not consistent. His 650y hole did not have a hazard and was not difficult in any way, it just was hit, hit, hit and you reached the green. There were trees on the green at #16 so watch where you land and hole #17 is the only one with bunkers in the fairway and at the green that could cause a problem.
#5 hole, par 5, 546y, with a 49y drop, your drive will end near pine needles and then rocks on the left and trees on the right of this narrow fairway 329y, with a second shot of 220y and a 22y drop. Here is where it becomes like a miniature golf course hole, the green is elevated, if you don't hit as far to the left as possible the ball will roll down a hill close on the right. I chose a 5 iron, it was a fun hole in a sadistic sort of a way, and fortunately he didn't make a habit out of it.
#10 hole, par 4, 487y, although this hole hasn't any obvious hazards what so ever, the fairway is the hazard, it is fairly narrow and very heavily sloped to the left. Your best bet is to drive to the far right but you will still roll a little to the left, 292y. Now I had a 6 iron for 195y with a 30ft drop to an extremely long narrow green, you're standing on a slope so adjust for it.
#14 hole, par 5, 551y, while this hole has 2 bunkers and a patch of rough they didn't cause a problem but the narrow fairway and wound around green can. After a 284y drive and not showing in the top view were trees in the left side of the fairway but they too aren't the problem. Now with 263y to the flag the green shaped the way that it is cannot reasonably be reached with a normal 3w. Keeping to the rule that I must play in the fairway not the rough I was forced to use a 2 iron, which bounced off of an elevation in the fairway 200y, and left me with a 67y lw to the cup. This complex hole can leave you with a birdie or elevated blood pressure.
An interesting course, it's both a first attempt and a very good one at that but it is quite interesting at times. While it is not an award winner and has been very overlooked, maybe because of the name, it has its moments. It is hardly a bad course in fact it is an entertaining course in spite of its length, and is a fairly small download. Will it stay on your hard drive, I doubt it but I certainly would give it a try, not choosing it over a known winner but as a fall back on course. Try it you may like it.
