LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

October 2001

This course was created by the team of Jim and Delinda Wood, both of whom are premier designers. It features a magnificent pano by Dave 'Dlunatic', detailed hole previews, and a very fitting custom splash by our own Roger ' Alliegator' Worsham. An impressively formidable team.

I found this totally green course to have an extremely interesting variety of textures for the tee box, (mowed lines) fairways with a contrasting first cut, a rough which at times lets you into an early out of bounds, and an interestingly textured green and fringe.

The treatment around the water hazard was quite well done and understated so as to not distract from the rest of the course. The environmental sounds blended in instead of being a feature of their own. The green on the 5th hole had large decorative boulders that added to the overall wooded look of this course. For the undergrowth, they used deep grass that made hitting into the trees a most uninviting experience.

Both the caddie and the elevations were perfect. The undulating and sloping fairways in some cases led you astray just when you thought your shot was perfect.

The greens are a story unto themselves, they are sloped just enough to make the perfect landing run 20ft past the hole. To hit and stay on the greens you have to use a loft shot or risk running off onto the fringe, or even worse .into the rough or bunkers.

The putting was moderate and the fairways normal size, but the fairways in the wind and fast greens will be a huge challenge, just as it should be.

Truly a fascinating course.

3rd hole, par 5, 590y, you have to weave in and out of this bunkered hole. Your drive should stay as close to the right bunker as possible to give yourself a clear shot to the green. I had a layup of 50y for my 3rd shot to put me well within birdie range.

7th hole, par 5, 527y, a fairly straight hole but not even on the sides. The bunkers or roughs curved in and out making a clean shot imperative. My drive landed 292y downrange leaving a 233y shot to the green. If I adjusted a 2 iron I would run off of the sloped green, so I chose a flop 3w, landing 41ft past the flag but on the fringe.a chip.a putt.a bird.

10th hole, par 4, 381y with a 52.8ft drop, a rough cuts the green in half, this took the driver out of my hands and replaced it with a 2 iron. I used this to go to the right of the fairway just below the rough (look at that view). Now I had a 145y with a 28.7ft drop shot to the flag; adjusting an 8 iron to a flop I landed 9.5ft from the hole.

12th hole par 3 190y, with a 13ft drop, use a 5 iron plus a perfect swing for an excellent shot under the watchful eye of Jim's trademark hot air balloon (in every one of his courses). this time patriotically decked out with the stars and stripes

13th hole par5, 538y, on this 'S' shaped hole with only 2 water hazards and 7 bunkers we must give it a little thought first. I placed my aiming stick 282y straight up to the edge of the water hazard and then used a draw shot to give me a 289y fairway landing. With only 218y to go, allowing for my poor stance, a full 2 iron put me within 13.1ft of the hole. an eagle for a better putter than I am.

15th hole, par3, 202y with a 45.5' drop, a 5 iron is perfect. You won't get much roll and will be left with an uphill putt.

18th hole par 5, 563y with a 38y rise in elevation making it into a monster hole. perfect for this course. I drove to the corner of the fairway 254y, and it left me 289y with a 53.4ft elevation to go. I aimed for the small bit of fairway in front of the bunker, over swinging it left me with a pw to the pin as I watched old glory in the background.

A fitting end to a challenging and beautiful course.

Summing up this course is difficult because I said all the glowing things that I could during the above review. Nevertheless, I will muster up a few more.

This is not only one of the most beautiful and challenging courses I have ever seen, but it is a guaranteed 'keeper'.

Should you download this course in spite of its size? Definitely. You certainly don't want to be the only one in your crowd not to have it.

Play it and enjoy it, I did.
