LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
January 2002
In his readme he describes the course: Gut Lärchenhof is a 6627m / 7247yds Par 72 championship golf course. This Jack Nicklaus design is the home of the Linde German Masters and was build in 1991. Since 1998, when it hosted the German Masters for the first time, the course has become one of the top stops of the European Tour in Germany.
This is the third edition and release of this much liked course and time has been very kind to it. It is difficult to describe a course to the people who have all played it and read about it in some way or another. I found it now to be slightly changed from the first course that I called links to this beautiful well defined links- parkland course. It has had many subtle changes and has added to the pleasure of its playability and looks. From the tee boxes to the mowed fairway, to the first cut that is just a lowered rough and looks like it is part of the course, not an addition, to the interesting patterned greens with their very obvious fringe, this course along with it's interesting and pleasant environmental sounds is a pleasure to play and a joy to behold. The scattering of trees in some areas gives you the typical links feeling while the heavier growth presents you with a parkland course but the mixture works very well indeed. The hazards, tall grass, water, bunkers, deep grass, fields and trees that don't line the fairways are all there but do not seem to be hazards with careful play.
The elevation and the caddie were as you would expect, perfect, the fairways were of normal size and you didn't have to worry about getting into that dangerous tall grass where many golfers have disappeared, never to be heard from again. The putting was surprising easy and even I made some long ones, the greens breaks being ever so gentle. It wasn't a difficult course to play in the least but the challenge always seemed to be there even without heavily guarded fairways and greens. The 4-5 pars, # 3, # 13, # 15 were reachable in 2, # 7 wasn't.
This course although not being a difficult course was in it's own way a challenging course. I sailed along listening and playing and when I reached # 16, # 17, and # 18 I saw a bit of a more interesting aspect of the course, these holes had some bite to them and pleasantly closed out a thoroughly enjoyable round of golf. On the # 18 hole, par 4, 460y I just finished in time and gazed longingly at the massive clubhouse in the distance as the thunder boomed overhead. If you haven't played or downloaded this course it is my opinion that you do so. It is a course that belongs on the hard drive.
Reviewer Note
I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
