LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

Assuming this is a fantasy course in its current state, the whole course is based upon a deep grass terrain. And being at only 4mb the file never gives you too many insights, as a lot of courses are coming in at this size recently.

Well, my initial thoughts as I started this course was that it looked very long, the holes and the par 73 speak for themselves. The view of the 1st fairway was long and narrow, and elevated. Once driven though, the visuals began letting themselves down. The fairway bunker overspills, and looks jagged and badly elevated. Once the green is found, the fringe doesn't look right. It is raised and not sharpened correctly.

This tends to be the theme for most of the course. There are a lot of visual wrongs, and overkill areas. The trees are everywhere, and obviously an area that once in will be a ricochet to get out of. On too many holes do the trees look like they were there first and have no interest in golf.

All in all, the course seems to have too many visual things wrong that appear unfinished. It plays ok, and the island greens and elevations make this very challenging. The lack of anything but hit and duck, in case of trees make this course appear lacking. The odd bounce off a fringe around a green make it annoying, and the raised and sloped bunkers give you slim chance of feeling your way out. The 15th green is a prime example of how things got out of hand.

Reviewer Notes: by Doug Jensen

This reviewer plays using hardware rendering at 1024 x 768 32 bit color. I play No Wind, Medium and Moderate and play the back tees using moderate pin placements. I play my normal round and consider myself a average links player. My ratings are from 1 (very bad) to 10 (very good) for Visuals and 1 (very easy) to 10 (very hard) for all other ratings.

Joe Stellema designed Clueless Hills. This is a tough course that requires you to think before you take a shot either off the tee or your approach to the green. Deep grass is used off the fairway so staying on the short stuff is important.

Visuals:
Clueless Hills looks good as the deep grass texture looks good and although only 1 type of tree is used on the course, it looks nice nonetheless. Basically middle of the road visually.

Off the Tee:
Playing Clueless Hills off the tee is an adventure. There are narrow fairways on many holes and missing the fairway not only leaves you in the deep grass but also will sometimes result in a side hill lie. The Par 5's are monsters the longest measuring 693 yards. If you want an eagle on this course, you will have to hole out an approach. There are trees in the fairway on Hole #3 and there are doglegs to negotiate at #3, #5, #8, and #13. Also you will find a long sand trap in the fairway on #14

The Approach:
Your approach shots onto the greens at Clueless Hills will also test you, as the length of the hole will require a hefty club to reach the greens. There are some side hill lies you will have to negotiate off the fairway and sloping greens will await you on some holes. I used easy pin placements but some very tough pin positions await your approach shot.

Putting:
Putting is easy to moderate at Clueless Hills. Holes #13 and #17 provide a challenge with your flat stick. There is a bunker on the green at #10 that will come into play depending on pin placement

Overall, this is a nice course by Joe Stellema. Best of luck to him on his next design.
