LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Matt Lilly
Expectations: I have never played any of Dave's courses and a ReadMe was not provided so therefore I do not know what to expect.
View from the First: This is a woodland course and the first hole opens with a dogleg left. The fairway rolls gently and the bunkers and smooth and appear realistic. The most noticeable difference between LakeWood and most other courses is its use of the running water texture for all bodies of water. The majority of courses use the still water to provide reflections. To tell you the truth, it translates very well onto the topcam. It is in no way distracting during play and is a welcome change. I just like to imagine that it is a windy day and that the breeze is skimming across the surface of the water. It's truly a pleasant sight. The first green is not overly difficult and has only minor to moderate breaks.
Hole 3: This is a dogleg right par 4 that gives the option to aim at an island fairway or to play it safe and stick to the left. The elevations are especially smooth here.
Hole 8: Gently rolling fairway unfolds before the tee. Water is present on both the right and left-hand sides. Bunkers are scattered throughout the rough on either side as well.
Hole 10: This is a long par 5 totalling out at 628 yards. Two small lakes come into play on the right of the narrow fairway. A total of seven bunkers make up this hole.
Hole 13: This hole once again presents a choice. A river divides the fairway in two and the player may decide on either one.
Hole 14: A beautiful hole. Elevation work on the hills surrounding the water is very well done. In addition, bunkers display no apparent flaws either.
Hole 16: I felt as if I was walking a tightrope on this hole with such a narrow fairway. Hazards are a danger on both sides as well. A rock formation juts out of the ground to the right of the tee boxes. The greens have become more challenging with severe breaks now being the story.
Hole 18: The terrain suddenly changes as rocks now support the tee boxes. In addition, the water now reflects for the first time on the course. I am not exactly sure why this was done, but I like to think that a calm from the wind has settled over this final hole. By the way, it does look very stunning now that everything around does reflect.
Good Points: Everything on this course seemed to flow very freely. Most everything was smooth and free of jagged edges. The layout was challenging as well.
What Needs Work: I would have liked to see a little more intricate planting around the water. I was also surprised by the fact that a ReadMe was not included. By this point, that is almost a requirement for most courses and it shows that great pride is really shown in the course. Obviously, these are nit-picky things and they in no way detracted from the play.
Favorite Hole: #14
Final Thoughts: This course was a joy to play and the real seller for it is that the file size comes out at just around 10 megs. This course will most definitely remain on my hard-drive and I would advise anyone who has not yet downloaded this one to do so. You won't be disappointed, and even if you are, you haven't wasted that much time on the download.
