LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Matt Lilly October 2001

View from the First: This appears to be a woodland course. The first fairway is wide and inviting. The only obstacles are some bunkers 300 yards down on the right. Unfortunately, they are sharp and uneven. The first green is fairly simple with only minor breaks.

Hole 2: There are a few large boulders off to the left of the teebox which appear very out of place. Once again, there is a generous fairway to aim at.

Hole 3: This is a 620 yard par five which produces a blind second shot if the top cam is not open. However, there is a considerable drop because I was able to pull off a 300 yard 3-wood, so that helps shorten the hole considerably.

Hole 6: A simple 188-yard par-3. The selection of trees is good, and they do not appear to be over or under planted.

Hole 7: The water appears to meet the rough to abruptly. Perhaps wooden planks or a stone could have acted as a retaining wall, especially on a body of water this big.

Hole 8: I was not a big fan of the dormant grass used on the hills that border the fairway. Some undergrowth needs to accompany it to make the scene more visually appealing.

Hole 14: Planting of trees and wild grasses is good. I like the appearance of the somewhat barren trees. The green on this hole is more intricate as well. A creek which flows behind the putting surface comes off as looking fake. There are a lot of large stones planted in it and I could not even tell it was water until I checked the terrain.

Hole 15: The tee lines you up directly into a large tree. The boxes would have been better off moved a bit more to the left.

Hole 18: A nice finisher. Tee shot is over water and that leaves you with a second shot over dry and wild grass. The planting was well done.

Good Points: The layout felt very natural. Also, the choice and planting of trees was good.

What Needs Work: I would concentrate on smoothing out the bunkers and other areas of the course that look sharp and jagged. I would also try to make it more visually appealing by paying more attention to detail.

Favorite Hole: 14

Final Thoughts: J.C. appears to have the basics of the APCD down and did a good job of getting a nice layout. Now I think he should look at expanding his horizons and maybe doing a more intricate type course. This was a good effort, but with all of the top-notch courses out there, I don't believe anyone would seek this out. I am sure it served as a good learning experience and hopefully J.C. can add on to what he has already learned.
