LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner (loner)
This is an extremely beautiful course to look at. The shades of green for the tee boxes (each decorated tastefully), the heavy rough, the patterned greens, and the fairways attractive but would have fit in better with the rest of the course if they had mow lines instead of being 'flat green.
His selection of green trees interspersed with deeply colored ones added to the beauty, and the various assortment of undergrowth set the course off.
The rock treatment around some of the water hazards the rock walls and rough wood benches created a warm inviting course. A most pleasurable course to look at but unfortunately not to play.
8th hole, par 4, 278y, you can't cut across this hole and with the driver effectively taken out of my hands I went to a 2 iron with a fade because of the overhanging tree immediately in front of the tee box, this left me with only a 48y approach to the flag.
9th hole, par 5, 584y, the drive took me 283y down the narrow fairway and left me with a 269y (with a 5.7' drop) approach to the flag. I cut across to the green, if you go to the right of the trees near the green you are safe, if not you will find them to tall to clear, I landed 31 ft from the cup, for me a two putt and a birdie. I wonder what the tall stone (just off the green) 'chimney' is for.
10th hole, par 4, 439y, with that skinny tree on the left of the tee box I found that a straight drive of off this tee wasn't always possible so I first moved my ball over to the right side of the tee. I placed my aiming stick 284y down the fairway just slightly into the rough and used a draw shot, this put me 289y down the center of the fairway, leaving me a 141y (with a 35' drop) to the green. I adjusted a 9 iron and it put me 12.5ft from the cup.
12th hole, par 5, 666y, target golf, pure and simple, a drive of 286y to the end of the first fairway, a 245y drive to the end of the 2nd fairway, and a 135y (with a 18.5' rise) to the pin, an 8 iron was perfect, yes you will get your bird but.pitch and putt.
14th hole, par 4, 431y, if the trees which can be cleared make you nervous move your ball in the tee box to the left and it will find the fairway.146y to the pin, a 9 iron was perfect.
Something was wrong with this picture perfect course, it didn't play well.
On the front 9 the putting was easy to moderate but on the back 9 it was moderate to ridiculous. The greens slope was very unnatural and the course wasn't a challenge but a chore. From the overly narrow fairways to (12th hole) target golf this course was trying to be interesting but instead it just was not consistent.
Besides the beauty, elevation, caddie and the placement of the bunkers were excellent
This is why an honest beta tester is needed.
I'm not planning to keep this course on my hard drive and I might download it just to see how well it was made, but would I recommend it to you, I'm sorry to say no. It was not a joy to play as it is.
