LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Pete Dixon

July 2001

Tom has been around for a while now as one of the earlier designers and it is obvious that his courses have improved over time. I am sure there was an original Rolling Meadows but I can't find it so I will review this as though it was the first.

Rolling it is, meadows there are but he forgot to mention this is right by the sea too, unless the rolling also describes the waves.

A fictional seaside course and one of four Tom has bought out together, and from first impressions and the first hole things have improved considerably, a deep drop to the sea to the left, rolling fairway, some nice planting, custom textures and improved bunkers make you feel like you are on the South coast of England, one negative point was that I saw some pulling around the green from the top cam view, I like this hole but was disappointed when the rest of the course didn't match the same standards.

Although things have improved there are is still plenty of room for improvement, there are pulls around elevation changes around bunkers, fairways and the greens which should be Tom's next venture to eliminate, these look worse on top cam but are evident from the normal viewpoint too. I also think that the shape of the bunkers could be more varied as could the placement and the edging, there are too many holes that have two long ones either side of the fairway followed by two either side of the green and one behind and there are still signs that he is not 100% comfortable with the design of them yet although they are still quite good.

As I continued around the course I could see that there was a playable course here with a realistic settings but the errors that are there did detract from the playability and it could have been so much more.

Best Hole: I like the first hole best as I described above, in fact the first two holes were my personal favourites.

Overall: Although improved from earlier efforts this still has plenty of mistakes, especially in elevation changes. The course design is a little naïve and although I quite enjoyed some of the holes I would not use this course regularly particularly with so many now available of such a high standard. I still think there is more to come from Tom but he has to eliminate these errors if he is to progress in the manor where I would be looking to keep his courses on my hard drive.

This review will be based on playability, aesthetics and originality. Please keep in mind that this is only my opinion following my play-testing of the completed course.

I fully understand the hard work and immense skill that is involved in the designing of these courses and my comments will try to be constructive and without bias.
