LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
July 2001
8th, par 4, 317y, the caddie gives you a 3w and you can hit the green in one, depending on your putting skills you can get an eagle. If you don't get a birdie on this hole, well.don't ever admit to it.
9th, par 5, 598y, a very interesting hole. It could be a challenge but is not guarded on fairways or greens by bunkers. Disappointing, it could have been an enjoyable hole.
10th, par 4, 372y, another 90 degree dogleg with a green that can be hit with tee shot ,but you must hit 12 and 6 o'clock snaps to be on target.
11th, 12th, 13,Th, 14th, the shapes of these show some imagination but lack the necessary bunkers to give you any challenge. The bunkers that are here are not at strategic points.
15th, The sea of white I see from the tee is puzzling, it's not in the overhead.
16th, par3, 159y, this island hole looks too perfect. I don't mean to sound cruel but it reminds me of a miniature golf course.
Using a 7-iron take two clicks up in trajectory (setup) and you should have a fine shot at a birdie.
17th, back to 90-degree holes.
18th par5, 606y, a mirror image of the 9th hole. It lacks any meaningful hazards with the exception of one of the lakes to the right. It is a fine looking finishing hole with an attractive clubhouse.
Both his elevations and caddie picks are excellent and the putting is more toward moderate than difficult.
The greens, roughs, fairways and tees are a good blend of colors and the occasional flashes of color are tastefully executed.
The rock treatments around the water are very well done.
His use of pano's is are the best I've seen in a long time.
Tom builds an extremely good looking golf course but good looking isn't enough. His constant use of 90-degree angles for his doglegs becomes boring. His inability to use hazards, bunkers, water, tall grass, etc., making this beautiful looking course into a less than mediocre course is frustrating. There isn't anything here to challenge the golfer, make him think, plan, change clubs.
All you do is aim and hit. The few holes he started to shape well didn't have any hazards.
By my count he has built 11 courses in 9 months but one isn't much better than the other.
With each of his courses that I play or review, I become more and more disappointed that he doesn't improve. He just churns out attractive, mediocre courses and I must to score him on playability and not purely aesthetics.
He has talent but seems to lack imagination. We need and want more enjoyable and challenging courses, not just more courses.
