LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Chris Gormley

July 2001

Initial Impressions: Elberts Renniw is a woodland course with no visible construction mistakes. Elberts is a course where you would be better off leaving your driver at home, and then players would not be tempted to use it and get themselves in trouble. You can tell a lot of attention has been paid to planting and elevations. Both of which are done very well. There are many blind shots and doglegs that take away from an otherwise great course. Not saying I hate them, just to many of them. I love the 'monster' bunker of #13 by the green. God help you if you hit the ball in there. J

Greens: For the most part the greens are very large and nicely contoured. They are also playable under all conditions. They are probably the best thing on this course, design wise. They are shaped, and placed in such a way that a player always has to think before making their approach shot. There are no ridiculous slopes on any greens, just nice contours to make all putts interesting.

Fairways: Most of the fairways are done pretty well. There are quite a few blind shots and doglegs as I have mentioned earlier. The thing that was most troubling was that the design of the fairways pretty much dictates what club you are to use for all shots. This took the fun out of playing the course for me. Very little risk/reward factor here as you can plainly tell what club is to be used. No areas that beg for me to pull out the bigger stick to try for the green or landing area, things are decided for you in the design.

Tee Boxes: All were large and clear from obstructions for the drives. A couple of them did not look natural and stuck out in the overall scheme of the course. #1 I believe was one of these. Just did not look natural. Overall though the tees were well placed to offer many looks at the golf course.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: The bunkers are pretty well designed and placed throughout the course. Most are an easy out unless you are up against the lip which is not very forgiving, unfortunately I was there often. J There is quite a bit of water on this course, and on most holes it is in play somewhere.

Planting: Planting throughout the course is very well done, nothing overpowering or distracting to the player. Trees were well placed around the greens to make the approach shots interesting.

Fairness: From a players standpoint this is a fair course. If there were fewer blind shots and doglegs this would be a great course, but in windy conditions some of these shots will like trying to thread a needle. A couple of these types of shots are fine, but there are to many on this course for my taste.

Best Hole: #5 is a great hole. If you can hit a fade with accuracy you will get a birdie, otherwise plan on par or worse. Great design to this hole.

Overall: Elberts Renniw (or is that supposed to be winner?) is a pretty decent course. There are no construction problems anywhere on the course. Things are well thought out in their placement in regards to trees, bunkers, and water hazards. The biggest drawback to this course is that the design of the fairways dictates what club you are to use. I like the freedom of being able to choose which stick to hit the ball into the woods with. That and the blind shots take some of the fun away from this course. But that is the only thing really wrong with this course. The greens, planting, and elevations are great, they help make this course a very enjoyable one to play.

When I review a course I do so as a player and as a Tour Coordinator. I look at things like playability, aesthetics, design, originality and construction. Since I have not created a course with the APCD I am not an expert on the ins and outs of the program, but do understand the amount of work that goes into a course. I will try to make any comments helpful to the designer from a players stand point and not from a designers standpoint.

Tested using Classic Swing with Pro Ability from the back tees. Played twice using the standard stroke mop with No Wind, Moderate, Medium and Windy, Firm, Fast conditions as well as numerous walk throughs in practice mode.
