LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs on March 2001

Set in an open terrain, and on a virtual flat plain, the course comes across as a very early first attempt using the APCD. The lack of elevations make this course very easy to play, and the width of the fairways make it easy to get close on the 2nd shots to the pin. A lot of the greens look either tilted or generally slope all the same way.

Having seen many courses, the faults and general theme's of most courses become 2nd nature, and to recall any things on courses that stand out is more and more difficult. The obvious way being to have a course that good everyone wants it, or to create one so bad it stands out a mile from the rest - but White Oaks is the middle of the two. It has some qualities obviously to the designer and is easy to play for the player.

Some of the holes are very samey, doglegs, or nearly reachable par 4's. The par 5's appeared tough with the wind on to reach in 2, and most I never managed. The bushes and jungle areas will cause penalties and can be found if any trees get flirted with.

Some more work is needed by the designer on the usual parts of the course around the green edges. The back of the 1st green is a typical example of some more through the course. Mostly sharp fallways where better contouring and adding verts could have made the slopes more gradual. The water used in the course sits on the same height as the fairway and at times doesn't give the right look. The 5th hole looks the worst for not having the water extruded down. Here, the fairway simply lays over the water like a carpet. Even a bunker looks like it has half of itself under the fairway. The lack of elevation causes many visual wrongs through the course and even at the edge of the land plot where the panoramic view appears to come in too quick to the surrounding edge of plot.

The 18th hole layout was nice to see though, having the choice of 2 fairways being one a `go for it' shot and the other playing safe always make courses stand out for giving the golfer a choice.
