LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Pete Dixon on February 2001

My first impressions were very much a feeling that you were playing somewhere like the Scottish Highlands or in Canada or America where the vegetation is lush and the surroundings are mainly pine forests with man made lakes alongside a huge natural lake or Loch.

There is a very well designed clubhouse which can be seen intermittently as you play at the obvious locations of which alongside is a beautiful large Country Mansion which fits in superbly to its surroundings. These buildings are set adjacent to the Lake or Loch where boats and yachts sit, all of which is very pleasing to the eye.

The design and layout of the course was good overall and a lot of care and planning has gone into that.

There are some nice tight fairways, bunker positions have been well thought out and are well placed with the exception of the fairway bunker on the 2nd hole which isn't going to trouble anyone in the position it is in and would benefit from being further up to catch wayward drives.

The red lines around the bunkers and water features take away from the realism, which is a pity as the bunkers and water features are of good shape and placement.

There is a good mixture of pars on the course and from the back tees the lengths resemble those found on a championship course and there are some tricky breaks on the greens making for a good challenge to your putting skills.

Planting has, in the main, been well used and again I agree with Ian that the bench and the cart, as well as some other items, such as the dovecote are not in scale or are not needed at all.

I particularly like the hedgerow that is alongside the 16th tee, this is something you would definitely come across when playing a real course and although only a small feature fitted in well.

Best Hole: Without doubt Tim has saved the best to last, the 18th is a lovely par 5 finishing hole with a tight fairway and large bunkers on your left and right for your tee shot, the green is only reachable in 3 shots and is surrounded by the clubhouse, outbuildings and the lake/loch with its boats which is visually stunning.

Overall: I believe this is Tim's first design and with that in mind this is a well thought out, challenging 18 holes of golf with good distance, nice design, visually very good, not a course you are going to readily get low scores on without some thought.

The weak points are definitely the red lines around the bunkers, water features etc which really do detract from the visuals and because of that will bring the overall score down as will the lack of texture in the bunkers, which all in all are well placed and have good shape but haven't got that realistic look.

Another area to me is the lack of a cut strip between the fairway and rough, I just think this looks more professional.

With a little more experience I am sure that Tim's next course, or if he decides to redo this course improving the areas outlined, will be one to look out for.

As for the course as it stands now, I just feel it isn't quite there and considering the size of the file it would , in my opinion, have benefited from a good beta testing that may have ironed out the flaws that are there and have stopped this from being marked higher.

Links Corner Design Analysis

The main points to note that let this course down are the bunkers. I would say all bunkers need attention due to being extruded with no texture placed on the extrusion. The course is littered with red lines around every shape extruded. This also applies to the water found in this course too. Most top views are littered with various dark shadows calling into question poor mesh' around those areas, with verts taking too much strain. And to add some more work for the designer, careful attention could be applied to objects planted too, with a bench on the 3rd hole being fit for giants, and a truck on the 18th being too small for any adult to use.

I would also question the 8th hole with windy conditions. This would make it extremely impossible to hit fairway with the head on wind. Players may also find some bad lies if straying from the normal fairways due to uneven elevations as terrains meet. They can either fall away sharply or sit in the valley of some. A rather large raised area exists on the end of the 11th fairway in the rough, where part of the fairway terrain exists where the rough overlays. It certainly needs a look at.
