LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

Set in an open, grassland, type area, the course has a good open feel to it. The views are fairly open and the trees are planted in good bordering styles to the hole layouts. Different styles of grass feature on many holes, along with the rough and the water too. Fairways are not too hard to miss, and the odd fading shot is required to avoid the dogleg fairway finding rough.

The course has little else to it, and makes for fairly easy scoring with relatively flat greens. In fact there is not a lot of tough elevation on any holes. Bunkers are sunken to a degree, but some sharp and raised slopes make them awkward to play from.

Standing back from the playing side, the visual look of the course shows some faults pretty early on. A lot of the main areas of design problems, are the bleeding of the textures around most parts of the course. Mostly, these are found on the greens, where they bleed into the fringe, rough and sand on some holes too. Bleeding of textures causes the shape to lose the natural look it should have. Other areas that look like they need attention are on the 4th, 12th and 13th with some elevation problems. I won't begin to describe them here, but they look unfinished and twisted and the main example being on the left side of the 12th fairway.

There were some areas where near water, the reflections went weird. They seemed to reflect the panoramic view more than anything else, and even looked like a scene underwater on some holes. Not sure if this was related to the course or not though.

Designers Note:

I have no experience with the designer. This review is based on playability and looks alone. Other reviews will highlight the design aspects of this course.

Bob Fournier is the designer of TPC at Rolling Hills. Bob also designed Fox Quarry. TPC at Rolling Hills is a park side course with trees, sand traps, bushes and water. This is nice design that really looks great and I enjoyed my round at TPC at Rolling Hills.

Visuals: This is an above average design visually. There are a few rough edges but overall I really liked the design and the look of TPC at Rolling Hills.

Off the Tee: Your tee shots at TPC at Rolling Hills are easy to moderate. Holes # 1, #4, #13 have narrow landing areas. Hole #6 has 2 trees in the fairway that will force you to split them to have a good approach. Hole #9 also has a tree to negotiate off the tee. Hole #15 has a tree that hangs into the fairway and you could get behind it if you are not careful. Hole #11 has a creek that is just short of your landing area off the tee. Hole #18 will require a power drive and long approach to make it to the island green in 2.

The Approach: Your approach shots onto the greens at TPC at Rolling Hills are fairly easy as there is only moderate slope on just 5 holes. Most of the other fairways are flat. The greens are very receptive to your approach as they are fairly flat and the pins are set toward the center of the greens.

Putting: Putting is easy to moderate at TPC at Rolling Hills. There are no big breakers but you will find moderate break on 6 holes.

Great 2nd design Bob. Good Luck on your next course.
