LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

Virtually classed as LDC 1st Final submitted Course, Timber Cliffs is a great expectation of what may come. The Designer Eric Browne hasn't left this course lacking in too many areas. The whole feel of the course is a great tribute to this Designer who made me feel like I was playing a private golf club. Step onto the 1st tee and you may begin to feel the same way.

Admittedly, there are faults. As yet, we cannot gauge any Course 100%, but I doubt there will be many, if any that don't have something that doesn't look right close-up. But, the efforts have been made and it stands up. If I wanted to be critical, I could point out a few cart paths that would leave a spectator or two balancing finely on one leg. The odd bunker doesn't compare well to the rest, a hard edge here and there, and even one face on a bunker without a texture. But, I was looking for those features.not playing the Course. Anything will stand out if you scrutinize things closely, but I believe the Course stands out for the other qualities too.

Take the 2nd hole, a long downhill fairway drive will make you think carefully. And the green has been nicely sloped from back to front to make your 2nd shot that bit more trickier. But the look of the hole tempts you into trying something different every time you play the hole. There are a few holes that take you through different thoughts too. The 15th & 16th will make you think and tighten that snap on the swing meter very carefully. The foresting of the trees leave little imagination to even dare think of risking of a shot through them. They are heavily foliaged to cost you penalties if you do.

The 7th hole has another thought risk on the tee, with the added tree in the fairway. The 4th hole will make you wish you knew the course better after taking your 2nd shot and see your ball rolling off the sloping fairway. There are many things to entice you into shots, and then testing you to see if you remember them when you return. The hole layouts are well done, most you can drive with the 1W, but then quite a few will stop you pulling that club out every time.

All in all, it impressed me. It also made me think of Phoenix too. Some characteristics of the courses compared, either in the tree's or the 7th hole, and maybe even the 18th hole too. But, if that's a comparison, it has to be a compliment too.

Designers Note:

I have no experience with the designer. This review is based on playability and looks alone. Other reviews will highlight the design aspects of this course.

Timber Cliffs was a very nice first effort from Eric Browne. I did have 2 putts on #3 and #9 that lipped out but were counted as in the hole. Not sure where the problem lies. Also had a graphic irregularity where the sky bleed into the background on one hole but the rest of the round was fine.

Visuals: This course looks fine. Nothing spectacular but very solid. Lots of trees but very little water.

Off the Tee: Timber Cliffs has very tight driving areas on most holes. Eric accomplished this by tight fairways (#6 and #15), a tree in the middle of the fairway (#7) and a 90% dogleg on #16. Eric also used deep grass everywhere except the fairway so the penalty is great if you miss the fairway.

The Approach: If you made the fairway with your drive on Timber Cliffs, you approach is fairly easy. The greens are fairly good size.

Putting: Putting was very fair on Timber Cliffs. There were some easy greens but this may be more indicative of the easy approach shots and getting it close to the hole.

Timber Cliffs is a great first effort from Eric and I hope he continues to design more courses in the future.
