LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart

First Impression: This is Alan Syen's third course uploaded to the Links Corner. I have reviewed his previous course Old Quarry Lake. I must admit these two design are very much alike. This one is in a mountainous setting with many lakes surrounding the course. All of the lakes are edged with a wood bulkhead like look a la TPC Sawgrass. The textures are very bright green and look good with the course. The course is rather long measuring at 7489 yards from the back tees. Your biggest worry here are the numerous bunkers and lakes. They often come into play in many holes and the landing areas on the fairways are quite small. This does make for a good challenge and an enjoyable round.

The trees are a mix from tall pines to colorful fall dormant trees. The are set in very good places and the overall look is very nice. There are a few sod based pot bunkers, but the main ones are edged with dirt or wood. On many holes you must drop down clubs to safely navigate this course. One errant tee shot and you are in a lot of trouble. The designer extruded the rough and the tee boxes for the 3d look, but in a few areas it looked as if some of those extrusions caused faint red glows around those areas. I went into the APCD and it looked as if the terrain was chosen properly. I could not figure it out.

Overall it was a very good course and a huge improvement over Old Quarry Lake which was a decent course in itself. I think it may be a nice challenge for many and you should enjoy your round here as long as you stay dry. Well done Alan.

Custom amenities: Several houses were added to this design. Also bridges and several other amenities were added to enhance the design. I even saw a winsock in the hills on the 13th hole.

Greens: They were generally flat with the exception of a few that have many tiers. They were natural looking and you should score pretty well here.

Fairways: They were very undulous and offered a challenge in itself. They often caused uneven lies that made you think twice about shot selection. No second cut of rough was used.

Tee Boxes: They were well crafted and looked nice. Many overlooked sunken mounds or water and offered a beautiful view off the tees.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: The were mostly edged with either wood or sod. They were very well shaped but did lack a smooth transition between textures at times. They were very well mixed up so you had no idea what to expect.

Planting: This is a parkland style course so trees and shrubs were not overstated. Very well done in this area, but I would have liked to see some underplanting below the treeline.

Best Hole: Several rated well in my book. I chose the #10, 448 yard, par four. It offered a great tee shot and the second shot was over water to a smallish green. Bunkers guarded both sides and made for a tough approach.

Overall: A well designed course with a Parkland setting. The wood bulkheads helped it stand out from many other courses. A tough challenge awaits you here. If you are not on you snap...you will suffer. I still wonder what caused the faint red rings around the extrusions?
