LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Course History:

Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club, which has been recreated for Links by Sale Mihok, is located in San Antonio, Florida. When looking at the layout of this course you notice very quickly that there is water on every hole. The course follows a mostly circuitous route amongst the many ponds and lakes for the first nine holes and then circles around the other way for the last nine. The golf course is in essence a large figure eight. This recreation however has not duplicated that route. The holes as they have been recreated here consist of nine holes going straight up the terrain and then a parallel nine holes starting from the bottom again. The hole shapes have been duplicated and most of the water has also been recreated. The only available pictures of the course show very sparse planting consisting of mostly palm trees. The course looks to be extremely flat with no panorama in the distance. It appears to be a typical neighbourhood golf course played by all of us on weekends.

First Impressions:

Planting here is much heavier than I expected it to be. It appears as if there are more trees planted on the first hole than there may be on the entire actual golf course. Quite a bit of variation was used also. Seeing pine trees mixed in with palm trees took me by surprise on the first hole. There is no under planting but the mixture of trees, bushes, flowerbeds, and plants looks very nice. The bunkers are a real mix here. Some have no edges and show heavy shadows while others look more complete. There were a lot of stock bunker shapes used as well as stock green shapes. The water has a lot of variety also. Some of the ponds are lined with different types of rocks, some are edged, and some are not. The fringes and greens are not mated well with quite a few unrealistic slopes apparent. The greens themselves are for the most part severely contoured and a few are a little too contoured. There are houses, ball washes, alligators, benches, and tournament objects scattered throughout the course.

Strategy:

There is plenty of strategy involved in making your way around. Many of the holes have severe doglegs and some require fades or draws around trees. The greens as mentioned are severely contoured and are difficult to putt on. All of the par 5's are easily reachable and these present your best shot at getting a birdie. One of the par 4's is also reachable by hitting a big fade around some trees.

Favourite Hole:

Par 4 9th hole. I really liked the stonewall separating the golf course from the houses in the background.

Overall:

Too many faults are apparent here to recommend this course. It does show quite a bit of promise though and if you decide to take a look at it then it may surprise you.
