LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

Fantasy based, and set with a mountainous backdrop, this course spreads out over a large highly elevated and forested area. The elevations become highly apparent on the 1st tee as the fairway drops below your feet for your first drive.

This course has good wide fairways making landing targets easy, but the use of elevation makes hitting become a little cautious when the odd water hazard makes an appearance. The rolls the fairways give could lend to any shot gaining the odd penalty, or sand traps lay in wait too.

Not too bad in playing, the course has some good aspects. But there were a few things that stood out whilst playing, mainly fringes. They tend to be raised or even tilted that high that it looked wrong. Several due to this some fringes had sharp edges back off to the fairway.

One hole stood out in a way I hadn't expected it. The 11th hole looked the worst of the elevations. The area surrounding the green was very sharply elevated. The bunkers looked pulled too deep and would be extremely tough to play from. Visually, this hole stood out for those reasons. Another visual was the area in front of the tee on the 16th. It showed some pulling on the terrain between the other two tee areas, another point to note. There were 3 tee areas on the course, but only one is playable.

All in all, not a bad course. Challenging in the aspect of elevations. Most of the greens play very flat making this rewarding in your scores if you hit the snap well.

Designers Note:

I have no experience with the designer. This review is based on playability and looks alone. Other reviews will highlight the design aspects of this course.

Tom Goodrick designed Tabletop Vista. This course has severe elevation changes, which makes club choice very important. Don't expect to actually make a putt, as the ball never goes into the hole even though you are credited with a made putt. This is a severe flaw that should have been corrected before release. Tabletop Vista is a mountain course with trees that do not come into play very much.

Visuals: Tabletop Vista is very good visually. Great views can be had when you have a drive into a lower elevation. On some fairways the mower lines run in the wrong direction, which is not a big deal but should have been addressed.

Off the Tee: Tabletop Vista has wide-open fairways, which are easy to hit with a good drive. A few fairways have severe side break, which will funnel you ball into the rough on occasion. Trees do not come into play off the tee very often. On Hole #4 the tee box is not level which should have been corrected.

The Approach: Your approach shots onto the greens at Tabletop Vista are fairly easy if you can navigate the lie you may have in the fairway. Bunkers will not come into play often.

Putting: Putting is too easy at Tabletop Vista. A few holes have small break but many are flat as a tabletop (hence the name). This is not natural as with all the elevation changes on the course, there should be some elevation changes on the green and there is none

This is a good first design by Tom Goodrick and I wish him the best of luck on his next design.
