LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by James Wood
Course History:
Royal Melbourne East is an actual course located in Australia. Stuart Kahle who also recreated Victoria and Commonwealth has recreated it for Links. Mr. Alex Russell designed the East Course. It was laid out during 1930-1 and with Mr. Mick Morcom in charge of construction was ready for play in 1932. This course is sometimes combined with the West course for major tournaments. The Composite course as it is called was used for the President's cup in 1998. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 17th, and 18th holes were used along with 12 holes from the West course. The Composite Course is regularly rated in the world's top ten. The Melbourne Golf Club, which has existed continuously from 1891, is regarded as the oldest golf club in Australia. This recreation follows the East course layout faithfully.
First Impressions:
This is a remake of a previous release by the same name. The course has been cleaned up and looks much better this time around. This is a very open course with wide fairways, nicely formed bunkers, and as you would expect there isn't any water hazards. The planting here is fairly sparse with some bushes under the trees. There are some custom trees and bushes as well as a few houses to include the clubhouse.
Strategy:
The course is fairly easy off the tee boxes with no requirement to fade or draw your tee shot. The landing areas are narrow and occasionally guarded by well placed bunkers. The pin positions can be very difficult forcing you to risk the hazards if you want to get the ball close to the pin. Three of the par 5's are reachable. The greens are very contoured and putting here is difficult.
Favorite Hole:
Hole #18. The view down the fairway with the clubhouse in the background is the best view on the course.
Overall:
Give a choice between Commonwealth and Royal Melbourne East I would choose to play Commonwealth. This course isn't quite as interesting and it doesn't catch your eye as well as Commonwealth. A nice course though and it is certainly worth downloading and playing.

Chris Gormley's thoughts...
Overall: Royal Melbourne East #2 is your basic course. Everything is in its place and everything is designed and constructed pretty well. But there is nothing that really grabs a player and says 'play me again, and again, and again.' Don't get me wrong this is a pretty decent course, but compared to some of the best available this one seems a little plain. There are some sharp edges and shadows throughout the course. None really effect the play in anyway, just cosmetic things. The planting on this course is basic and sort of plain. A little more colour would have made the playing experience a little better. The greens are large and undulating. Only a couple of them would be a real challenge with Fast/Firm conditions. The fairways are pretty straightforward in design. Not quite a grip and rip course, but almost. There is very little in the risk/reward area. There are a couple of spots but not many. The bunkers are well placed to make a player think but generally they can be avoided with decent shots. Overall a pretty decent course, but there is nothing really special to hold a players interest.
