LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

A familiar panoramic to this course, but was it the usual blend of fairway/fringe and sand/water? Not so much in a nutshell, this course has some qualities.

Hard to describe a course you can see developing through the holes. The course is a mixture of those described above, but with the added trees and some holes being quite a challenge, the course just about holds its own. Laid out nicely, the tee areas have a terrain of rough around them all. The drives on many holes will make you think twice about the driver, especially the almost reachable par 4's that may have you running to practice mode to see if you can reach the green. The 6th hole is responsible for this, although the 3rd hole will make you question yourself too. There are also very accurate drives required as narrow fairways with trees lining the hole will test your tee shots, and most of these coming on par 5's. From memory, only one par 5 was reachable in two, and many will try to score there. The consistent thing on most holes though, were the blind tee shots, requiring good use of the top view to overcome this debatable design. Bunkers are also a prominent feature, being very deep and causing some very steep lies to escape from. And finally onto the putting, where the greens again don't allow easy rides, sloping here and there. The 15th green will frighten many being 70-80yds in length!

And so, onto the points found. I did note some of the fairways, greens and water edges appear polygon/mesh shaped. Not a flaw, but notable in top views. If I had to pick one thing on this course, it would be bunkers. These seemed to start in a different fashion to as they ended. Some were extruded slightly, but most were simply pulled down and in a lot of cases were perhaps too deep. The 5th back green bunker was very trenchlike. There was a line visible in the 10th tree bunker. On the 12th, the first bunker had some hard edges inside. The 17th right green bunker was perhaps too steeply sloped. All in all, bunkers did cause this course concern. Other brief mentions were the 7th left side fringe/fairway bulging. Sharp hard edges around that 10th tree bunker in the rough. My one question does ask why there is a fringe across the fairways on the 9th and 15th holes? Appears like the shape was inserted at the wrong time, although does nothing to knock the course at all.
