COURSE NOTES

Glenn

Liberty National Golf Course opened on July 4th, 2006. Designed by Tom Kite and Bob Cupp at a cost of $250 million it is one of the most expensive designs in golf course history. After Westchester CC decided not to host The Barclays in 2009 Liberty was chosen to take it's place and met mixed reviews from the pros. That is when Kite and Cupp decided to make some changes in the design and so the PGA has awarded Liberty the tournament again for August 2013.

APCD Version

Liberty National started as a production line project which was a dream of Joe Otto's. He tried to start a APCD production team and the idea did not take root for almost two years when I started to work on Liberty. During the work on Liberty the course underwent a major renovation so I had to make some changes in the original but I do think this course should be a challenge to play.

Enjoy,
Glenn

Description
Real, parkland course
Location
New Jersey
Conditions
M*/M* feels about right. Any faster might be too much.
Concept  8/10
No doubt about the location here: with the Manhattan skyline and national monument spread across the panorama, you could only be on the borders of New York. Tom Kite\'s course is a stunning match for the locale, with signature holes scattered along the first half. It\'s a step away from other PGA staples: the long grass provides an effective hazard, and there are plenty of Par 4s that aren\'t stretched over 400 yards.
Appearance  8/10
Parts of the course have received superb levels of attention, and the grass planting, course buildings and variety of stone-work all look outstanding. The pano, of course, is crucial to the course\'s sense of environment and works well. There are a few oddities here and there, including some cloned trees and the running water using a centuries-old texture, but the dark green colours are a pleasant scene-setter which make it possible to overlook some of the hiccups.
Playability  7/10
Some great holes and environment here, and there is plenty to enjoy as the course transitions from almost links-like holes to target-style crowd-pleasers. The dry grass is tough and unthankful stuff, though, and tangling with it is likely to become a frustration. The rendering times will make for some frustrating waits, too.
Challenge  7/10
An odd selection, in that quite a few holes are virtual sure-fire birdie chances, but on others you can see strokes falling away almost immediately. The toughened-up rough is partly responsible for this, and it\'s debatable whether it was the designer\'s intention to make it quite so difficult. There are also quite a few awkward greens and pin placements.
Technical  8/10
It\'s a shame that the futuristic clubhouse didn\'t find a place, even in 2D, and the experiment with the texture properties may backfire on repeated plays. But generally, this is a creation which feels fresh right from the first tee and doesn\'t really let up. Playing a four-round tournament will reveal more depths, too.
Overall A lush and dark course in a virtually inimitable setting with some intriguing visuals and rewarding strokeplay. 38/50
