CLIPNOTES by Ben Bateson (ousgg) |
Description Fictional, links course |
Location Southern England |
Conditions Playable on F*/F* although something slower would suit better. |
Concept 8/10 The original Cuckmere links had rustic Sussex charm stamped all over it at the expense of some pretty rustic construction. Matt has re-created the gorselands nicely (although at the cost of the pretty yellow flowers, sadly), and put a new spin on the course environs which retains the beauty and location. |
Appearance 8/10 The rocky coastline, even without too much modification, still looks fantastic, and Matt has put some excellent high-res textures in place, particularly around the bunkers. Although the original gorse feels a little cropped, there are some some tasteful course extras with solid 3D work. |
Playability 8/10 The progression and story-telling of Cuckmere have remained thankfully intact, and very few courses have such a great progression as you battle through the gorse down to the lovely closing stretch along the coast. There are a few unwanted blind shots, sure, and the sound is disappointingly absent, but there's enough atmosphere and good layout here to more than account for that. |
Challenge 8/10 The original course had some horrendous greens which really did make playing it a turn-off in many competitive settings. Unsurprisingly, they've been eased somewhat, and actually the net result is that the course is a little too easy - this may also have something to do with allowing much of the thick brush to be easier to pass through. A tightening of the fairway width wouldn't hurt at all here, in order to provide that authentic links-course intimidation. |
Technical 9/10 Matt has responded to feedback excellently and brought Cuckmere back much closer to its intended environs and layout. It feels much more real than many other fictional courses of its period, which is no small blessing either. |
Overall |
A links course whose greatest asset is its evocativeness and layout. Which is no bad thing. |
41/50 |
