COURSE NOTES |
Royal Winchester, Hampshire, Southern England (Winchester is the ancient capital of England) was officially made "Royal" in 1913, the year that John Henry Taylor, the Club's most famous son, won the last of his five Open Championships, a record he shares with James Braid, Peter Thompson and Tom Watson. The Course is laid out on chalk downland, and although not long, is quite a challenge when the wind blows. |

Concept 7/10 I\'m rather taken with Royal Winchester. John\'s style with APCD is well suited to the feel of this course, lying on the boundary between the South Downs and New Forest. It\'s relatively short, but reliant on some intriguing angles into greens - many of which you will be playing with a sand wedge or downwards. The 10th, in particular, is a vertiginous delight. It\'s a proper British parkland course as they were meant to be played. |
Appearance 4/10 John has had a dabble with 3D buildings, which are only barely textured but sufficient to break up the greenery, and has handled the textures and blends effectively. However, the planting has a few oddball choices and clones, and some bad mesh folds are apparent, particularly on the 9th, marring what should be the course\'s trademark hole. |
Playability 6/10 Despite the short length, there are fewer gung-ho holes than you would expect, thanks to clever - but minimal - hazarding, good hole shaping and the use of off-slope approaches. I found plenty of requirements for creativity and golfing gumption all the way around. |
Challenge 5/10 The opening holes yield the most birdies with the test stiffening around the turn. The Par 5s, notably, don\'t yield shots easily. John\'s pin-planting is more reasonable and the greens shouldn\'t cost too much, though: it\'s hard to see where many birdies will come from. |
Technical 2/10 As well as the mesh folds and the errant planting, there are a lot of texture assignation errors (I found at least three in my first round). There are more planting problems on the 9th and 10th: I would hope much of this should be picked up during final testing. Whichever way, the designer is surely capable of better than this. |
Overall |
A really interesting and authentic course. But it needs some careful treatment before it will be ready. |
