LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

Arrow Hills is one of those courses that has hit the same medium as other early releases. Set amidst the forested elevated backdrop, and with very little variety in tree combinations, it starts off on the first hole with a very familiar look. The whole course has that feel too.

Nigh on all the holes have very large fairways, not hard to hit, but some may ask you to drop a club or two. What does stand out for me, was there were some tricky tee shots that could have asked a question or two of a player. Something that is always a challenge, appeals.

But, the course is let down badly by the lack of finishing in certain areas, ie bunkers. All have depth and make tough to play from, but there are hundreds of sharp edges in the bunkers, where the hardness needs changing to 0 for better smoothing. They visually stand out poor, and also are visible in the top views.

Water is one feature that the Designer could do well with, once mastered. Too many large lakes or streams have no depth of embankment that would give them a better sense of perception. Some holes, when looking at them or back at them, you wonder how the water stays where it is, compared to the landscape. And, on the streams, why do they simply stop after crossing the fairway?

Personally, more work was needed. The odd shadow also appears in some top views making mesh cleanup more required too.

Reviewers Note:
I have no experience with the designer. This review is based on playability and looks alone. Other reviews will highlight the design aspects of this course.

Tim Belcher is the designer of Arrow Hills Golf Course. Arrow Hills is a mountain style course with trees, sand, water and a few flowers. This is a good first design by Tim but there is a few flaws. There are too many doglegs at Arrow Hills. This is not the only course with this problem, as designers who want to create a tough course will often overload with doglegs. Also there was running water on #17, which crossed the fairway in 2 places. There was no depression in the fairway for this water to run which looked very unnatural. Otherwise, Tim did a good job of making one tough course. I enjoyed my round at Arrow Hills Golf Course.

Visuals:
Arrow Hills Golf Course is slightly below average visually. The design flaws mentioned above along with rough edges gave it this rating.

Off the Tee:
Your tee shots at Arrow Hills Golf Course are moderate to hard as Tim used trees, water and sand in the landing areas. There were also severe slope at the landing area that sometimes funnelled the ball to the rough. Tim takes the driver out of your hand on some holes to stay out of a hazard. On the Par 3 15th hole, you could not see the green from the tee. This I suppose is OK for a fictional course but again, not natural. On Hole #18, you will find a tee and water right in the center of the fairway making it tough to place your drive where you can get a clear shot at the green.

The Approach:
Your approach shots onto the greens at Arrow Hills Golf Course are moderate to tough as well. You will encounter severe slope on the fairway at hole #5, #9, and #18. On other fairways, you will encounter only slight to moderate slope for your approach. The pins are in the center of most of the greens making your approach easier.

Putting:
Putting is moderate to hard at Arrow Hills Golf Course as well. You will have moderate to severe break on most of the holes. Getting down in 2 will be difficult on some of the holes

This is a good 1st design by Tim. Good Luck on your next course.
