LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by James Wood
First Impressions:
This is a fictional course with a park style setting. Planting here is done with mainly pine trees that fit in with Whistlers Mountain being used as a panorama. This course is very busy. Quite a few buildings, bridges, flowerbeds, signs, benches, animals, and other objects can be seen throughout the round. There is a first cut of rough and quite a few different textures have been used. All of the tee boxes are raised up and either framed with wood or stone. Quite a bit of under planting has been done here under the forested areas. Also apparent on the course were many rock formations and ravines that gave a good mountain feel to the course. Water is also plentiful and comes into play often.
The bunkers here are plentiful and are done with a second extrusion of dirt and then the edge has been turned. They are deep in places and there are a few with some shadows and poor edges. Some bad edges are also apparent in the course and these edges are mainly seen in the top view. The water is edged with mud with a turned edge applied. There were several trees suspended in the air at the 16th hole. The course was generally well done though and with some of the elevation changes being as drastic as these were credit should be given for handling these changes well.
Strategy:
All of the forested areas are OB. The author of the course chose to place this layout in an environmentally sensitive area as he is replicating the conditions found on other real courses in the area in which he lives. It probably wouldn't have been wise to try to hit a golf ball out of these areas anyway. The fairways are very narrow and you will find yourself in the first cut or rough on many of your second shots. Elevations come into play throughout the course and club selection is very important. Knowing where to hit your tee shot can also cause a problem because it isn't always apparent. Leave the top view on and you can navigate around pretty well. Some of the holes were island hoppers. The greens vary from being sloped to being fairly flat. The par 5's are mostly unreachable in two shots. The designer also recommends playing this course in the wind. It's tough without the wind and should probably be avoided by a player using Power Stroke.
Favorite Hole:
Hole #17 is a good par 4 and I enjoyed the view here. Many of the elevated holes could be your choice here as well.
Overall:
I enjoyed playing the course. The elevation changes, the general layout, the planting, and the objects all add up to a good design. The amount of effort involved in creating the course is apparent here. I would recommend you try this one out yourself.
