LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Chris Gormley

Initial Impressions: I have played most of Tom's courses and I always had an enjoyable playing experience and the same was with Pine Ridge Islands. Tom uses a little trick on this course that not many other APCD courses that I can remember do. The front 9 is a complete contrast to the back 9. The front 9 uses water, peninsulas and trees to create sort of an open, flat layout while the back 9 is more of a forested setting with little water and many elevation changes.

Greens: The greens are large and well contoured; I did not notice any unplayable slopes during my Firm, Fast round. The only things that were a little disappointing were that some of the greens had a couple of sharp edges that created shadows. Nothing major, but with the great care that was taken in shaping the greens, I thought the shadows should have been addressed.

Fairways: There are a couple of sharp edges here but nothing that would take away from the course. On the front 9 every drive is made over water. The first couple of holes I thought it was a great idea, but by the time I got to hole #5 I was hoping for some variety but there was none. If a river or some other water hazard could have been utilized instead of what was used on the previous holes things would have stayed more interesting. Most of the landing areas were very generous and were not hard to hit even in a Windy round. There were a couple of fairways that did not have that smooth look in the shapes. Almost as if there were a bunch of straight lines that had just been slightly bent to create the various curves of the fairway. I noticed this on the greens as well, a bit smoother image would add to already well designed fairways and greens.

Tee Boxes: All were large and clear from obstructions for the drives. Tom only used one set of tee boxes though L A couple of others would have been nice just for variety.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: I felt that all hazards were very well placed and thought out. Not placed just to harass a player but to make you think about where you were going to place your next shot.

Planting: The front 9 planting was rather sparse but I believe that was the feel for what Tom was trying to do there so it was expected. The back 9 contained quite a bit more planting and variety that the front 9. Regardless that planting was tastefully done.

Fairness: Ok for all swing types. I thought the course was pretty fair in all conditions except for one hole. Hole #5, the second shot requires you to shoot up over some trees to get to the green. Depending on which way the wind is going will determine whether you make the green in 2 or 3. Which is fine for a par 5, but this hole is a par 4. Not an impossible shot, just a difficult one.

Best Hole: None of the holes stuck out as the best but the 18th was a great hole in my opinion. A great little shot that drops into a valley where the clubhouse is nestled amongst pine trees. A lot of thought went into this hole and you can tell.

Overall: Pine Ridge Island is a good course. I really like the contrast between the front and back nines. It shows Tom put some thought into this course before he began working on it. I wish more APCD Designers did this. Made things enjoyable to play. The only thing that keeps this course from being in the top 25% is that there was nothing to really spice the course up. The design was good, the construction was pretty well done, but there was nothing that really reached out and grabbed my attention like other courses have done. Tom has a good course here and I would recommend it to anyone.
