LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

Wasn't sure what to expect from courses this filesize, but was pleasantly surprised to come across this one. There are a few questions I have after playing the course though..but here's roughly what you will expect. A desert terrain with a mountainous backdrop sets off 18 holes of golf. Very familiar feel to Troon was soon experienced, except this one had a bonus.the desert isn't actually out of bounds. The desert area allowing play within the terrain, makes for some shots to take short-cuts. The par 5's are worth watching for anything gained.

The Course played well, moderately challenging. Some hole layouts looked basic, some had a little edge to them in layout. The terrain was littered here and there with the cacti and rocks, all to good effect.

There were however things to note within the course that did begin to come under my scrutiny. Odd edges of different terrain did not meet together well. Some of the water actually slopes, especially around one edge it is raised as the terrain raises. The bunkers, are the usual LS bunkers, very flat, no depth or edges to them. I found an annoying problem upon the 16th hole where there were rocks placed. Once within them, it was impossible to get out due to their grouping.maybe not a fault, maybe planned.

To end though, it wasn't a badly planned course and comes across well.

Reviewer Notes: by Doug Jensen

This reviewer plays using hardware rendering at 1024 x 768 32 bit color. I play No Wind, Medium and Moderate and play the back tees. I play my normal round and consider myself a average links player. My ratings are from 1 (very bad) to 10 (very good) for Visuals and 1 (very easy) to 10 (very hard) for all other ratings.

Steve Pope is the designer of Paiute-Snow Mountain. This is a Pete Dye designed course in Las Vegas. The course is one of four courses on an Indian Reservation outside of Vegas. This is a desert course with rock formations, cactus and numerous lakes. This is a nice course and I enjoyed playing it. Steve used a fringe texture and rough around the fairways.

Visuals: The visuals are nice at Paiute-Snow Mountain. The detail may not be as polished as some of the
other courses but I enjoyed the looks of this course during my round.

Off the Tee: Since Paiute-Snow Mountain is a desert course, it is wide open with no trees only cactus, which will not come into play unless you go into the desert. There are wide landing areas on all of your drives but sand traps lurk on some holes if you do not hit it well. There are 2 short par 4's on #7 and #13 that are reachable with a power drive.

The Approach: Your approach shots onto the greens at Paiute-Snow Mountain are not difficult as long as you stay
out of trouble off the tee. Hole #3 takes a accurate drive over the water and a sand trap to try for
eagle. Some of your approach shots will require a shot from a side lie but none are too severe.

Putting: Putting is moderate at Paiute-Snow Mountain. All of your putts will have some break but only Hole
#12 has a severe break that you will have to negotiate.

Very nice course from Steve and I wish him the best of luck on his next design.
