The Course -
Being somewhat familiar in design to many courses out there, Maple Valley does actually give a good account of itself, and sits as one of those 'possible' courses.
Designed with the usual panoramic, and being planted with trees to suit the various holes, Maple plays an average game. All tees and fairways are extruded with a first cut, using a familiar texture seen elsewhere. The actual cut in the main view gives a nice edge to things for varying distance shots, and makes for good sight shots. Most of the course plays as fairly flat, with little problems found gaining good lies, so expect a reasonable score too. Bunkers are placed quite often at the end of fairways, and care off the tee must be taken to avoid these hazards. Trees do play their parts too, and the odd 2nd shot will scorn a badly hit tee. Odd trees placed on fairways also become bad hazards, with ivy terrain underneath requiring a drop and penalty. And, to become as similar as possible the Island green is found on the 14th.
Without wanting to take a lot away from this course, it does play well. The odd annoyance is the top view and the extruded/1st cut fairway etc. This leaves dark and heavy edges in that camera view. And, with many cuts on courses, there is the odd landing bounce or poor lie that will be found whilst playing. Bunkers are done well, and will pull many shots into them with most being sunken in the fairways. There is also the odd dark shadow in the top view where some things are not as they could be. There is a small bunker by the green on the 3rd hole that has poor edges, and the right side fairway on the 4th allows the rough/water to slope away hard. There are some nice touches in this course, but it does make you feel like you missed something too
