LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

Fictionally based upon a course known to many, this review will concentrate upon the Course itself rather than comparisons.

Again, many courses give you a feel of what to come on the 1st tee, and this one doesn't let you down either. The narrow fairway makes it interesting to drive for. The visual look makes you feel that this could be special too. Well, in brief.. it all delivers!

A nicely laid out course with alot of forest (although all trees do not show in top view), make this one of the most challenging courses too. A lot of greens are guarded magnificently by well shaped bunkers positioned with thought for both visuals and tough approach. Many will find this course engrossing when they start. The detail and planting too make this course one to want.

Putting is extremely tough if approach shots wander. The elevated and even tiered greens make for concentration on virtually every shot. Some greens are shaped to cause even more accuracy needed in case of leaving a fringe in the line of putt (another chipping on green issue coming lol).

There are a few things that do look odd as every course will do, the water on the 11th has too heavy a slope into it for fairway terrain. The water on the 12th looks like it should be running water rather than the reflective water used. But these are minor things noticed. The course stands up well, and plays great. It will be a worth addition to anyone's courses.

Reviewer Notes: by Doug Jensen

This reviewer plays using hardware rendering at 1024 x 768 32 bit color. I play No Wind, Medium and Moderate and play the back tees. I play my normal round and consider myself a average links player. My ratings are from 1 (very bad) to 10 (very good) for Visuals and 1 (very easy) to 10 (very hard) for all other ratings.

Magnolia Lane designed by Andrew Jones is a very tough course and rumor has it that it is patterned after Augusta National. After playing it, I tend to agree. This is one tough course.

Visuals: This course looks great. One of the best looking courses to date. Andrew used colorful bushes and trees that really add to the look of the course.

Off the Tee: Magnolia Lane gives you a mixed bag off the tee. You may have to contend with narrow fairways or a bunker and even if you have a wide driving area, the landing area is usually not level leaving a uneven lie for your approach. On hole #17, a tree behind the tee box obstructs your view for your drive.

The Approach: Your approach shots onto the greens at Magnolia Lane will test you as uneven lies from the fairway will force you to make an accurate approach shot. There are tiered greens on a few holes and it will be important to be on the correct tier to give yourself an easier putt. On Hole #14, I was on the green but the game defaulted to my chipping club. Not sure what the problem was.

Putting: Putting is very tough at Magnolia Lane. You will encounter sever break on many holes and if you end up on a different tier, you putt can be very difficult. It is very important to get your approach close playing Magnolia Lane.

Magnolia Lane is a great first effort from Andrew and I hope he continues to design more courses in the future.
