LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Ian Downs
The Ocean can be a cruel place for boats and ships, and obviously people. But designing a golf course on one takes imagination and a lot of engineering. Unfortunately this course fails in a few areas to be anything more than island hopping.
Set on a complete water terrain, the fairways and greens are simply extruded to create the landing points. In fact you could probably count the terrains used on one hand. The course doesn't have a panoramic view to offset anything other than the water leading to the worlds end. This is obviously deliberately un-used, but feels very user-designed rather than anything more.
The hole layouts are very samey, and have large landing areas making the water quite useless to the average player. The greens are average sized and sloped well to cause some pars mandatory. The fringes are very poorly done. Often, on holes you will see them elevated or raised where better shaping could have made them blend in better. Holes 5, 6, 8 and 9 are all visually bad on fringes.
Without wishing to knock this course, it does have very little to review except for the things that feel like they are missing. Not sure if there was a course or not..

Reviewer Notes: by Doug Jensen
This reviewer plays using hardware rendering at 1024 x 768 32 bit color. I play No Wind, Medium and Moderate and play the back tees. I play my normal round and consider myself a average links player. My ratings are from 1 (very bad) to 10 (very good) for Visuals and 1 (very easy) to 10 (very hard) for all other ratings.
Andy Tranter is the designer of Leaderboard III. Andy also designed Stern. This is course where you shoot to islands surrounded by water. I enjoyed my round but found it rather repetitious after awhile. This is not a polished course but was very playable.
Visuals: Looks OK. Nothing special
Off the Tee: Your tee shots at Leaderboard III are not difficult for the most part. You will have a narrow fairway or two along the way but can be managed. Hole #4 is a Par 4 that can be reached from the tee. You will have to rotate toward the hole and it will be a moderately difficult shot but it can be done. Hole #9 has a sloping fairway to water. My ball was rolling toward the water but just stopped on the edge. There was nothing to stop it so it really should have gone in. There are some decisions to make off the tee that will test you with your driver.
The Approach: Your approach shots onto the greens at Leaderboard III are sometimes difficult because of the pin placements you face. Most are on the edge of the green and with some severe sloping greens, it will be hard to get it close on some holes. You will face some moderate slope on the fairways but they can be negotiated.
Putting: Putting is moderate to difficult at Leaderboard III. There are some severe slopes to negotiate with your putter on about half the holes and playing fast/firm will probably have you pulling your hair out.
Enjoyed my round at Leaderboard III. Best of luck to Andy on his next design
