LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Designer: This is Mike Hamilton's first course design.

Course: It's important to know right from the first tee that Tomahawk CC is no easy course, but not so much because of how the challenge on the each hole, but more so because of how unfair each hole design is. In addition to that, players will have to deal with huge mounds of rough located in areas you'd be hard pressed to find in any course in real life, with the large area of rough found in the green on the Par 4 on Hole 7 coming close to one of the worst ideas a player could ever have to come across in a Links design. Even though Hole 10 was a good challenging hole, the positioning of the tees let the design down, facing the player right into the trees off the back tee. Tomahawk CC could have been a good course layout, but a lack of conventional design methods unfortunately has turned it into an unfair design.

Favourite Hole: Even though the bunkers surrounding the hole let the design down visually, the Par 3 on Hole 5 was my favourite hole on the course as it made players hit upwards into a downwards sloping green, which even though is quite unfair in terms of how it's constructed, was at least somewhat of a fun and challenging hole design.

Playability: No matter which tee you choose to play off, the course is quite long. The Par 5 on Hole 4 for example is 635 yards in length from the back tee, while on many of the Par 4's, players will have to settle for a Par, as due to their length, the opportunity for a birdie is often not possible. Even though some of the Par 5's like the one on Hole 9 are reachable, all four of them are either too long too attempt to reach in two shots, or carry too much of a risk to even consider getting an eagle on. With tight fairways and small greens, don't expect high regulation percentages when playing a round on this course, as it is truly a difficult challenge for players of all skill levels.

Technically: In terms of technical application, the APCD work throughout the course is quite poor, with the elevation, sloping and undulations being highly unrealistic, while the blending between textures looked unclean. Unfortunately, the worst part was the feature that there was most of around the course, that being the bunkers, which weren't at all made properly, with errors existing in regard to how they were made, how they look, and the fact that none of them had lips. Most of the APCD work didn't affect the playability, but the undulations in the fairway and greens were over the top, which often meant straight drives ended up in the rough, while putting for birdie could often result in having to putt for bogie due to the severity of the curve and slope in the green. Some of the tee areas were poorly constructed, while the edging of the water to the land was not at all done properly. In the end, this course would have benefited greatly from some beta testing, as in terms of the APCD work found around the course layout, this design was below standard.

Other: The course includes no extras except for a splash screen. What's unfortunate about Tomahawk CC is that the course has some good ideas in it, but the APCD work is what lets the course down. I'd recommend to the designer that if he intends to release another course in the future that he first read all the tutorials available on the APCD, and then when the course is close to release get it beta tested, as most often an opinion from someone else is what will open up a person's eyes to what they might be missing otherwise.

Download Value: Sitting just under 11mb, Tomahawk CC is a quick download for any speed internet user, but with no extras in the zip, all you are getting is the course file. Even though from the first tee the course visually looks fine, it drops off in quality from there, and because of the poor APCD work throughout the design, I can only recommend this course to people who like checking out courses from first time designer's, as this is not a course I will be keeping on my HD or burning to a CD.
