LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

Having talked to the Designer a lot through the final stages, I was expecting good things when this course finally hit my ISP. I can safely say, I was very impressed after playing 18 holes at this course. The visuals, the play, the challenge, just about everything meet the requirements that you'd expect from the designer and the program too.

Set in a wooded, mountainous fictional region, the course displays some great visuals. The look has my thoughts at present, the flowers, the rocks, boulders etc. Water plays a big part too, with some placements making things quite tricky. Even tree placements make shots difficult and careful planning needed. The fairway has some great touches, like having the rough as the first cut followed by deep grass. Even the fairway changes cut as the greens approach.

The Course itself is a tough challenge, and some of the fairway lies make critical snap and adjustments crucial. Bunkers cause some thinking too, and all are created with some great touches making them deeper than the normal LS style and worthy of apprehension. The greens on the 9th and 18th make for careful approach or you could be left with putts of up to 60yds. A nice touch, but again the chipping debate will loom.

Anyway, the only gripe that was pointed out to me, and after re-testing, I concur was the 11th hole tee. The overhead Top Cam fails to show the tree that plays a major factor in your drive. Saying that, I do not know if this is a design related bug or a problem with the program. Taking the rest of the course, I would say the latter. It shouldn't take any enjoyment from the Course though.

Without wanting to waffle on, I'll have to say this is a course that will stand the test of time and be talked about for a while. The area around having large greens is one that some courses are seeing of recent, and I'm sure many will voice opinions on it. Personally, I like it, you hit it there, you carry on. Don't let take anything away from the Langolier Golf Club though..this is a MUST to everyone's collection. Watch this Designer for future releases too.!

Reviewer Notes: by Doug Jensen

This reviewer plays using hardware rendering at 1024 x 768 32 bit color. I play No Wind, Medium and Moderate and play the back tees. I play my normal round and consider myself a average links player. My ratings are from 1 (very bad) to 10 (very good) for Visuals and 1 (very easy) to 10 (very hard) for all other ratings.

Fred Briggson designed Langolier G.C. This is a visual masterpiece that plays very well too. This is not the toughest course you will play but the attention to detail makes this a keeper for any hard drive out there.

Visuals: What one word can I use to describe the visuals during my round at Langolier G.C? AWESOME. I no not pretend to be a designer but Langolier G.C. looks great and it will be hard pressed for anyone to improve on this one visually.

Off the Tee: Langolier G.C. plays straight forward off the tee. You should not find much trouble except for narrow fairways on #11, #17 and #18. Sand traps are lurking to catch your drive on #5. As you look down the fairway of the par 4 13th, you will consider taking your drive over the water to the green about 300 yds away. I chickened out. On #14, a tree in front of the tee box will force you to use a fade to get to the fairway with your drive.

The Approach: Your approach shots onto the greens at Langolier G.C. are not difficult as long as you stay out of trouble off the tee. Fred uses rough, as his 1st cut and deep grass will await those who really mishit their drives. You will find some unlevel lies on the fairway and rough as well with #17 a prime example. On #18, a dogleg right makes your approach very difficult.

Putting: Putting is easy to moderate at Langolier G.C. The tougher putting greens will await you on #16 thru #18, which is the way it should be.

There is nothing but good things to say about Langolier G.C. Thanks FreddieB and now get to work on your next design.. hehe
