LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart

First Impression: This is the first course of Wayne Hewitt's that I have looked at. And I must say it was all my pleasure. This is a fictional Mountain course that features an excellent custom panorama. The view is perfect in all aspects. The course measures at 6798 yards from the back tees and is quite a challenge in all areas of play. The tee boxes are elevated giving for awesome views of the fairways. The textures used also give for a natural and unique experience.

The course is a delight to play. Many holes offer a great risk/reward factor and the planting is exceptional. Many rock formation are seen while playing and just add to an already excellent design. The landing areas are quite generous but often leave an unevern lie making you seriously consider shot selection. The planting is exceptional and vary in plant life. The tall pines used give it a very natural and well rounded look. All shapes seem to be unique in shape and well defined.

Objects are perfectly placed throughout the course and are great selections to help maintain the overall feel of the design. The custom sounds also add alot and really add to what I consider the best mountain course to date. There are no apparent design flaws seen and I was just in awe of the details that he added. Excellent work!!!

Custom amenities: Building, fences, bridges and many other objects were added to enhance an already great design. The custom panorama just added greatly to a very fun and picturesque course to play.

Greens: They were well shaped and a great challenge to play. But the most important factor was that they were very fair.

Fairways: Crafted to perfection, these fairways sloped very naturally and looked great. Although a second cut of rough was not used....the checkered mow lines were a sweet addition.

Tee Boxes: Nice and flat and offered many shapes. They were extruded to give that 3d look.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: They were all well shaped and extruded for the added depth. The planting around theses areas was superb and lips were noted on all. The only thing I noticed was the dirt lips on the bunkers could have been mapped better for an even better look.

Planting: One word---EXCEPTIONAL. The pines with the addition of the lower bushes were well planned and colorful. Excellent job. They also varied in size and type.

Best Hole: They all were excellent and it would not be fair of me to single one out. I chose the 18th as the sample picture because it had a great view of the clubhouse in the background.

Overall: The best mountain course that I have seen to date. This is a MUST download for anybody that plays links. I honestly believe this design puts every course I have designed to shame. Well done Wayne and you now have a new fan!

James Wood's thoughts..

Obviously quite a lot of effort was applied in the design of this course. The elevations, planting, and custom touches have been done beautifully. A course that will take you a few times to learn the proper way to play it correctly. Many risk/reward shots with some lovely views throughout the course. This may be the best of the mountain courses done to date.

Description
Fictional, mountain course.

Concept  9/10
There is an embryonic hint of the wonders to come in this early course from Wayne Hewitt. An absorbing and realistic mountain course, it makes good use of elevation changes and careful hazarding and you get the impression that holes have been carefully and millimetrically planned for maximum challenge. It's a convincing and likeable course with a good mixture of doglegs, straight holes, greens and hole lengths.
Appearance  8/10
Brilliantly detailed planting combines with the impressively large-scale panorama to create a convincing surround. The elevation changes are often steep but more often than not they are convincing. The only obvious flaws are some hard areas around extrusions, particularly noticeable around bunkers and tee boxes.
Playability  7/10
With such detailed and well-planned risk/reward, this is a daunting but fun course to play, although some of the endless stretches of deep rough and forest might frustrate. Worse is the sound, which although it has been customised is often too loud and inappropriate-sounding. I got the impression I was on a tropical island, more often than not, from the sound effects.
Challenge  5/10
This is a course designed for challenging golf and is certainly harsh in parts. The long holes and the short holes, in particular, are certainly no pushovers. Certain areas of the course are in-bounds but virtually unplayable. It never quite lapses into the unfair, and the green gradients are quite moderate, but, like on so many mountain courses, it's a struggle to break par.
Technical  7/10
Certainly there were already signs in Wayne's first work of the sheer beauty he was to bring to the APCD. The planting is well ahead of its time and the elevation work is superbly natural and never exaggerated. Just a bit more care with extrusions and tidying up those rather weak sound effects would turn this into a really spectacular course.
Overall A mountain course that plays fast and loose with water features and elevations without ever seeming unnatural. In that respect, an excellent achievement. 36/50
