LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed By Andrew Cray

Reviewed under the playing conditions of the Links Modification (Version 1.06) under firm and moderate greens.

About The Designer:
Mr. Watson in the past has given us such courses as Grand Pinnacle Valley Desert Course (Top 50%),Blue Marlin Bay G.C,,Pine Trace G.C, and Sunchaser G.C (all ranked in the top 25%)

Playability and Shot Value:
The course sets up well for any golfer, new or experienced. Due to most of the par 4's being short, you just have wedges and short irons in your hands so it's almost like playing the Bob Hope. Scores can go lights out on this course since there isn't much out there to defend par.I don't think it was the intention either. As for shot value, there are a few creative shots you can try out on this course. However, the fairways are wide and the greens are fairly large and generous. Bunkering around the greens was a mixture of heavy bunkering and light bunkering. Some greens only having one small bunker as its lone defense.

I was surprised that I could reach the 611 yard 17th hole by hitting driver off the deck to about 10 feet. And finally the drivable 18th can lead to some last minute heroics in an online match. At 355 yards, you can drive this green if you choose to. Take a line off the tee that will land you on the small strip of fairway running toward the green and you will leave yourself an eagle chance. I thought that was a interesting way to finish a round of golf.

Quality of APCD work:
A few things stuck out at me on this design. I thought the bunkers could use a little more definition to them. They were flat with small lips. Deepening them would add more of a realistic touch and challenge to the course. The elevation work on the 16th hole could have been done a little differently. As I stand on that tee, all I see is rough and the top of the flagstick. There are two bunkers guarding the green. I should be able to at least see the front bunker from the tee. It's a horrible disadvantage for those who choose not to use the top cam. Some of the greens could use a little reworking on the edges such as the 18th. In the back left portion of the green there is what looks to be a roll off area that just doesn't look right.

Extras:
There weren't any hole previews, 2 or 3d objects. Just a splash screen.

Interesting Holes To Look For:
There are a few holes on this course that make this worthwhile. I found them to be unique and fun to play.

The 5th hole is a par 4 that plays 368 yards, you can drive the green if the wind is down or at your back. Laying up to the fairway on the left is only needed if you aren't hitting the ball accurately. Make sure you pick a line that will carry the water.

The 9th at 317 yards is easily reachable especially with the new mod. It's just an aggressive drive and a chip from the fringe or edge of the rough. Water lines the left hand side of the hole making for an intimidating tee shot for those who can't hit the ball straight off the tee.

The 17th is a monster par 5 where you can reach in two if you have the bravado to take out the big stick off the deck. Favor the left side off the tee. Your second shot leaves you two options: 1. Go for the green favoring the right side of the green which slopes from your right to left (as you look via dynamic cam) or 2. Layup to a comfortable distance and attack the flagstick.

My Personal Opinion:

I don't like to discuss course names because that is strictly the choice of the designer, but I felt that Quantreros Hills didn't really suit the course. I got the impression that this was a desert course or something with a Spanish flavor. This course has the feel of a local municipal course somewhere in the Northern United States. I generally don't like the 'click and shoot' golf courses where scoring is very easy because all you do is click in the center of the fairway, click on the flag and execute. To me, that is basically playing golf just to chase the little white ball. Quantreros Hills seemed to fit that pattern. The course is wide open, so driving accuracy isn't all that important, although you have to hit iron shots close to score. The greens are mod friendly as long as you don't have them on the fastest setting. Some of the pins might have you putting for a while. The only main problem with Quantreros Hills is seeing the same trees repeatedly in some spots, so I believe planting needs a little touching up.

You'll find that most of Quantreros Hills' par 4's are under 400 yards so it really is just a drive and a short iron course. All the par 5's are all in the upper 500 yard range and the 17th is 611yards. Only the 8th hole is easily reachable in two shots. I was surprised to reach the 17th in two, but you have to crush a drive down the fairway and hit a driver off the deck to do so.Despite all this, if I had to choose one thing that would make me revisit this course it would have to be the 18th hole. Seeing my ball roll onto the green was a shock the first time, so I kept playing it until I convinced myself that driving the green is not a fluke .As stated above, I thought it was a very interesting way to end a round.
