COURSE NOTES
Extracts from the readme
Welcome to Buffalo Springs C.C., my first venture into the wonderful, frustrating world of APCD. I started off BSCC as a test course while trying to work through some of the great tutorials available. So please keep in mind that the whole course is full of experiments, some more successful than others.

Background

We live on the farm Buffalo Springs on the south coast of South Africa close to the town of Mosselbay. Buffalo Springs was designed as a fictional links-style course with my surrounding landscape as setting. (The background of the splash is taken just outside our front door.)

Playing the course

Theres a fair mix of short and long par fours and all the par fives are reachable in two. Aggressive play can hurt you as water comes into play on a lot of holes especially if youre planning to go for the greens from the rough.

You better have a polished short game if your approach shots are a bit off target. Some tricky up and downs around the greens will keep you guessing. At times a bump and run shot into a steep bank might be your only option.

The greens of Buffalo Springs are not easy and youll have to look hard to find a straight putt. All the pin placing I believe is fair and can be played FF with the MOD-version but doesnt expect to break par. on a windy day.

LINKS CORNER REVIEW

About the Designer Adriaan Maarschalk:
This is his first release. Buffalo Springs is another course creation that came via experiments with the APCD.

Playability:
This course is very playable. If you play with your head on straight and avoid driving the ball like Seve, you'll find yourself under par. The risk/reward factor itself is enough for you to download this course. Each hole presents a different challenge and variety of ways to play it. It's links golf at its finest. You're penalized for marginal or poor shots and rewarded for the good. Stand on the tee and be committed to the shot at hand. Any second thoughts can lead to big numbers.

Quality of APCD work:
This is an outstanding effort for a first time designer. From the 1st tee to the 18th green, the course just flows with beauty. There were no major technical flaws. Seam blending was well done and so was the pot bunkering. The textures, planting and vegetation fitted the area of the world where Buffalo Springs is located in. I certainly appreciated the attention to detail that the designer provided on this course.

My Personal Opinion:
As you stand on the first tee you are greeted with a long stretch of fairway. You can see the two fairway bunkers in the distance. You're playing links golf in its truest form. Buffalo Springs brings it all to the table. Accurate driving, superb distance control, and a deadly short game is what you need on this layout. This is a course where being aggressive can pay off if you are accurate off the tee, but if you stray off your intended line by just a small margin, you can find yourself in one of the many pot bunkers or a watery grave. Little pitch shots around the greens are tough due to the fast, sloping greens. Buffalo Springs features beautiful planting and vegetation work, superb hole designs, and excellent elevation work, as well as masterful high resolution textures.

Each round is totally different and you have to be on your toes to break par. The risk/reward factor on majority of the holes make it a challenge to play and good for online matches. Buffalo Springs has an exceptional stretch of par 3's starting on the 2nd hole. Each one of the par 5's are reachable in two shots so eagles and birdies are definite possibilities on those holes.

What attracted me to this course was after playing several rounds and shooting scores anywhere from the mid 60's to a nice score of 81 was that the more I tried to overpower the golf course and be aggressive, the more I was penalized. For example, hole nine is a short par 5 where you drive across a lake onto a semi-flat fairway. After a drive that split the middle of the fairway, I hit a four iron as best I could to about 3 inches from the cup for a near albatross, and tap-in eagle. That shot rose me out of my seat because the round before that, I had found the water and made a triple bogey 8.

At 7,084 yards, Buffalo Springs is not a brutally long golf course. The designer uses a great variety of long and short holes to enhance the playability and enjoyment of the golf course. The fairways are fairly wide, but with the large pot bunkering, it can make a player very weary. Missing the fairway in one of those bunkers can mean a bogey at best.

The designer pays great attention to detail by adding a little village that is easily seen when playing your tee shot to the second hole and a driving range can also be found on this course as well. I believe that this is a course that will be well liked by the Links Corner Community. It's a must have. It's going to stay on my hard drive and be burnt on to a CD for future enjoyment.

Disclaimer:
Thank you to the designer for letting me review your work. I pride myself on not being too judgmental or unfair. There is not one person who can master the APCD completely. This review is a thorough examination of APCD course design. This review is strictly my own opinion that is due to personal experience as a designer and player. If you disagree with what is stated within this review, the proper way to voice your concern is through a private message or my personal email which is located on the bottom of this post. Thank you.
