COURSE NOTES |
Leigh Lakes is set in open woodland and small lakes. It has been designed using just the basic APCD tools, no seam blends or extruding.
I have tried to make it pleasing on the eye with no impossible hazzards to get out of. I also wanted a course that would be fair but not easy.
This is my first attempt at designing and as yet I have not got the hang of how to seam blend . This is something I hope to work on for my next course. The more I do the more I realize just how much work the top designers put into their courses to make them look real !
I would welcome any remarks or suggestions as to what I should or should not do in designing a course.
Hope you find the course suitable for playing.

LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Designer: This is Derrick Summers first released course to the community
Course: From first impressions, it is evident that the course design was creatively thought out, however, considering the extreme length from each of the three tees, this course is more like a journey than a round of golf. If the course was 1000 to 1500 yards shorter, it would have been more enjoyable and much fairer, as players can often get tired of strenuous holes that require intense concentration every time you hit the ball. With the elevations also being a big factor, short shots into the green seemed to be much harder, but considering that this is the designer's first release, there is a great amount of promise for future designs.
Favourite Hole: The Par 5 on Hole 2 was my favourite hole on the course, as it requires three accurate shots to get to the green, and even though it isn't the fairest of holes due to its distance, it will be a stern, but enjoyable challenge to any golfer.
Playability: The most noticeable playability feature on this course is certainly its distance, with the course being 8531yds from the back tees, which is an extremely long course in anyone's books. Because of the distance, none of the Par 5's are reachable, so eagles aren't likely, but if you enjoy a round where breaking par is a test, then this course will suit you. As the Par 3's are also quite long, with each of them being protected by water and bunkers, you will be required to strategically think out your shot before you hit it. If you remain in regulation, birdie putts can be made with the greens being quite fair, however, considering the length of each hole, if you mistime your drive and put it into the rough, bogies or worse are more than certain to appear on your scorecard.
Technically: The APCD work on this course was good, with no major errors being visible, but the problem was that the course didn't include any of the features that have become standard. Some of the lines and texture joins could have been smoother, even without the use of seam blending, while the bunkers, although well done, needed lips added to them. One of the most integral features though didn't turn out that well, was the planting set, with too many different types of trees being used, making them stand out as being 2D objects, rather than realistic additions to the course. The greens were well done, with good curve and sloping, but with little things like an ocean texture being used to simulate a running creek, this course would have been much better if it was beta tested and given some more time. The three major areas I think can be improved on would be the length of each hole, using advanced APCD techniques and making sure that the planting looks realistic.
Other: The course does not include either a cameo, custom flag, handicaps, hole previews or splash screens, while the zip file has nothing else besides the course file included. As the course design was very well thought out, all I would recommend to the designer is to read the available tutorials and to ask questions, as with better APCD work, this course could have been much better.
Download Value: At over 36mb, one might expect this course to be really good, but with no extras included within the zip file or the course, the download could have been much better. If you're looking for a real challenge or enjoy checking out designer's first attempts, then I would recommend this course, as the distance itself will test any person's game, however, it won't be staying on my hard drive.
