LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Chris Gormley
Background Info:
This is the 6th course released by Ryan with the others being: Journey Divine Club, Pines Lake, The Legends National Club, The National Club, and Wildgrass Course @ The Royal Club. Here is a little bit from the readme:
'If you were looking for a fun course to enjoy with your online buddies or even a round with the rest of the family. You have found it!
White Hawk Executive is exactly what it is, an executive course. This course consists of just par 4's and par 3's with a total score to par of 64, measuring 5798 yards. You can post very good scores here because I made it not to be a challenge but to have fun with your fellow online buddies.'
Overall Impressions:
White Hawk Executive is one of the more enjoyable courses I have played in quite sometime. It was quite refreshing to not have to worry about bogeying those long par 5's. Now this is not the most technically perfect course, nor is it full of 'eye candy' but it is a pretty good course even without the bells and whistles.
The fairways and greens are all rather large with little to keep the player from shooting the lights out on this course during a round. The greens are for the most part very large and only a few are contoured to give a player some problems. The fairways although protected by bunkers and water hazards are not overly difficult, even in windy conditions. Because of this openness throughout the course there is not a lot of risk/reward type shots. Although some can be created on the shorter holes if a player wants to push the envelope and go for that lower score than one might normally try to achieve.
There was some good use of both the bunkers and the water hazards throughout the course. Their placement, although not overly difficult, did make a player think a little bit before taking a shot. But for the most part they were not in play unless a player let their shot get away from them.
The technical side of the APCD in this course is pretty well done. There are a few problem areas like some sharp edges and some jagged shapes but for the most part Ryan has shown some great improvement in his handling of the APCD.
The planting was done pretty well, especially the under plantings in some areas, especially the river/creek that is located on hole #3. There were some repeated tree plantings throughout the course but for the most part it is a very nice course from a visual aspect.
A few of the textures looked a little odd and out of place(1st cut around the bunkers) but with a little more experience in choosing these I am confident that Ryan's next course will 'blend' together much better than White Hawk Executive does in spots.
Closing comments:
Overall this is a very enjoyable course to play, which was Ryan's goal from what the readme says. Things were planted well and each hole showed that some thought went into it before it was created. If you are looking for a fun place to have a relaxing round of golf check this one out, I don't think you will be sorry you did.
"I am writing this review from the viewpoint of not only a player but as a Tour Director. Although I am not a designer I understand the work that goes into a design as I have beta tested many courses and my review is simply how I as a player/Tour Director would view this course."
