LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Designer: Douglas and Karen Montgomery have released two 2001 courses, with those being Black Valley No.2 and The Dragon's Lair, with this being their first 2003 design.
Course: Early on in the round, there was some promise with the design, but after a few holes, I soon realized that the course is practically made up of the same holes repeated over and over, with those being either dead straight, or doglegs. The amount of doglegs included gets to the point of being ridiculous, as the only difference with each one seems to be the distance. The elevations on the back nine become unreasonable, with the final one on Hole 18 not allowing the golfer to hit a proper shot. The problem with the design of the course is repetition, and if the designers intend to release future designs, I hope they become more creative with their hole designs.
Favourite Hole: My favourite hole on the course was the drivable Par 4 on Hole 12, as even though it wasn't designed very well technically, it was fun to play, and quite innovative compared to the holes on the rest of the course.
Playability: At nearly 8000 yards long from the back tees, you may think the course is quite hard to play, but nearly every hole has an elevated tee, so often the holes are much shorter than what the distance actually lists them as being. If you remain accurate off the tee, you should be able to shoot a low score, as the greens are challenging, but realistic enough to be able to sink the putts. With a lack of good bunker placement, the only real challenge to this course is managing the elevations, as otherwise, the round is just simple target golf.
Technically: Unfortunately, in regard to technical features, this course is more like a 2001 design than that of a 2003 one, as no advanced or quality APCD techniques seemed to be included within the course. Edges, lines and lips were not smooth, and even though they did not affect playability, they are not very appealing visually to look at, as in consideration of the best average quality of courses designed presently, it is hard to understand how a course can be released with such faults that stand out so much. The course includes only stock textures, while there is no seam blending, and the edges around the tee boxes are probably the worst areas found on the course. The planting was probably the best feature, but often, it seemed some of the plants did not match the style of the course, and even though the elevations were good to start of, they became more fantasy than fictional as the round went on, getting to the point of being extreme at the end of the round. The panorama was too close to the left of Hole 1, the ladies tees were actually longer than three others, and somehow, there was no flag waving around except when replaying some shots. The sounds were interesting, but on many holes, the crowd cheering kept playing over and over again, and got to the point of having to turn off the volume. Designing one course alone is a great effort, but as this is the designers third release, I would have expected to see more of an effort in regard to the technical features on the course.
Other: The course does include a cameo, handicaps, hole previews and splash screens, but neither are of a very good quality. As the designers had released two courses previously, I expected that they would have improved their creativity and technical ability since their last course, but it seems this isn't the case. The only thing I could recommend would be include more innovative hole designs, and to read as many APCD tutorials that are available.
Download Value: At just under 20mb, the course is relatively small compared to many other courses released presently, however, with no extras being included in the zip file or within the course, I can only recommend this course to people who enjoyed the designers previous releases. This is yet another fictional woodland course, and considering it doesn't offer anything different compared to all the other ones available, it won't be staying on my hard drive or be burnt to a CD.
