LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Designer: This Doug Massey's first course design, and for a first attempt, is quite a good effort.

Course History: Located in South Burlington, Vermont National Country Club was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II, and even in its early stages, was awarded by the Burlington Free Press as the Best Golf Course in 2003. Whether you are a beginner or an expert golfer, the course will allow players to be both challenged and relaxed, and along with USGA standard greens and tees, Vermont National Country Club will provide the finest of golfing experience, while maintaining the natural beauty of the environment. More information can be found at http://www.vnccgolf.com/.

Course: As the course has five different sets of tees, golfers are able to maximize the difficulty of the course off the back, or relax and have an enjoyable round off the front. Challenging Par 3's, drivable Par 4's, and reachable Par 5's for eagle opportunities, Vermont National Country Club has been designed to test any golfer's game. With a double green joining Hole 10 and 15, and a challenging Par 5 on Hole 18 to finish, any golfer will enjoy a round on this real course.

Favourite Hole: My favourite hole was Hole 1, as it was a drivable Par 4 that allowed the golfer to make an easy birdie to start off the round, but also because it allowed the risk of pushing for an eagle opportunity.

Playability: Even though aesthetically the course may not be as appealing as many other 2001 courses, the playability aspect of Vermont National Country Club is what really makes it stand out. As the bunkers have been placed to come into play in many different conditions, it is important to analyse where you need to place the ball on the greens, as with quite some curve and slope to them, a player will be thankful for any easy putt they can get. With interesting elevation changes off the tee on many holes, drives will need to be in regulation, or else you will struggle to make par with the planting and rough found around the course.

Technically: Compared to the many of the outstanding courses released these days with the APCD 1.5, Vermont National Country Club is certainly nowhere near as technically advanced for a course released using the APCD 1.1. Even though it is a 2001 course, there are many things that could have been made better, as the lines were not clean cut, the bunkers were not edged, and the water simply met the land, rather than having an edge to it. As the course relied heavily on the look taken from the plants, the many instances of cloned planting really stood out, but on Holes 13 and 18, the planting was well done and added well to the atmosphere of the course. In future, I would recommend having the course beta tested, and to use the available tutorials to learn more skills in the APCD.

Other: Even though each of the holes have been handicapped, the course does not come with a Cameo or Hole Previews, while the photo used for the splash screen should have been included in the zip file, as it is sensory overload looking at it while the course is loading. As recommended to any designer, each zip file should contain a read-me file, as after downloading a course, it is good to read about the history of the course and what went into bringing it to life in the APCD.

Download Value: At just over 27mb, the playability aspect of this course alone is well worth the download, while for fans of real courses, this is yet another course that can be added to the collection. It won't be staying on my hard drive, but it will be burnt to CD.
