LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Dullatur Carrickstone
Designed by Stewart Parker

The version of Dullatur Carrickstone being reviewed is a secondary version and is one of 10 designs created by Stewart Parker in a very short period of time.

My Overall Impression:
I have mixed feelings about the course. I like the hole layout, and the fact that the designer decided to remake a real golf course for the PC. However, I wish that the designer had taken more time with this design. In my review, I will not be rude, harsh, I will give the designer some key things to work on, because I believe with a little work and dedication he can come out with a design that will satisfy the typical Links 2k3 player. I remember when I first downloaded the course. I must have been one of the first 10 to do so, thinking I got away with a well done course that was small in file size.I then posted a comment in the Player Review forum. It was taken too seriously and the designer was slammed. This time around, as requested by the designer in his readme, I made a player to play with yardages of those of a high handicapper.

Key things to note about the course:
The designer uses a set of textures that are very dark. I love the texture used for the green, though I find the fairway to be way too dark. The bunkers are well placed, but seem to look like the default bunker setting used in APCD. The lips are very sharp and could be redone. In some of the bunkers, an effort to add slope led to other sharp edges that made the bunkers look poorly done. As I stated, I really don't like the fairway texture, it really stands out. I read in the readme file that this course really doesn't have much slope to it, which is fine. But maybe for the PC a little more slope could be added to toughen up the course a bit. Planting was another key issue. One style of grass on one side of the fairway and a row of similar trees on the right. For help with planting, download courses and see how other designers make their courses look. Tall Pines Estate is a really good example of it. The trees were too close the the fairways and required shotmaking that otherwise would not be necessary.

What I recommend:
Go to the megalinks page and look up APCD websites and get the skinny on APCD. I see lots of potential in the course, however it needs a lot of attention to get there. Or, PM a reviewer (like myself) or a respected designer (Selberg, MJ, Patscheck) and ask for help. There are a lot of people here on Links Corner that will help you with your every need.

Course Difficulty:
Not a hard course. I am a decent player and I somehow managed to shoot a REALLY REALLY ridiculous number here.

Playability:
Very playable. Might staying on my hard drive or a CD, but download it and you be the judge.

Other:
Comes with a splash screen and hole previews with real pics of the course.
