LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Portions of his read-me (taken directly, as is):

"A FICTIONAL/LAKESIDE/ challenging 7178 yard championship course meets up it's challenge followed by the dreaded TPC style deep grass fringes each hole. The tee colour setup is different, it goes from navy blue to red, in between it goes from the primary-tertiary-secondary-tertiary-primary colour tee. The fairway, deep grass and green is picked up from another course, but i forgot which, the fringe and rough and tee area is stock. The course surrounds a lake that has a mud ring around it that drop 15 feet to the lake itself. But once used to be a full lake, the local townspeople used up the lake foolishly plus hampered by recently dry spell."

"Lakeside Resort has another feature that i included, wild grass, to give this a "nature look". Its a hazard, of coarse, because by rules it is and the grass and flowers and thick trees make it impossible to play."

This is by all counts the third course that he has built; the first two were Gentle Hills (20%) and The Eagles Nest (35%). I've never fully played the other two but from the screen shots and reviews by two of our best reviewers (Chuck Clark and Mike Nifong) this course is a marked improvement, by a fair margin over them. It was built as you see in 2001 so the textures weren't very 'exciting' but as far as color goes it looked fair enough. He had a flat smooth tee box and an un-mowed fairway, which looked the same. The fairway didn't have a first cut, it led into the mottled green rough, then into deep grass and finally into a heavy growth of trees. The greens were also flat textured with a fringe. His choice of trees seemed endless and even when mixed with the orange or other colored ones seemed to look quite nice. His fairway and greenside bunkers had deep brown-red sand; the construction could have been better they seemed to lack a 'certain depth'. Back to the fairways for a moment, the lack of a first cut in this case showed both the sharp division between the fairway and the rough but most of all the errors (sharp corners) were made more the obvious by not having it. The greens showed both irregularities in shape, and I believe it's called 'extrusions', the sharp looking black lines where two different parts of the course meet. In this case it was of course, the green to fringe, to fairway or to rough. He had what he called 'dead grass' as a cart path, I wouldn't say it was the most attractive idea but with the colors and the type of grasses he had it seemed to fit very well, nice choice. I don't have to cover his water hazards the read-me portions should take care of that.

He had varying elevations, which at times proved interesting; because of them and a few target holes I found that my driving average for the course was a few yards under average. Yes the caddie was more than sufficient. The fairways were nice sized and almost all had severe slopes, something that proved to be enjoyable, guess were the shot will end up. The greens were flat or slightly sloped and had minor breaks, I would call them a touch under medium in difficulty, also enjoyable. He did have quite a few blind shots but with the broad fairways they shouldn't be a problem. The bunkers in the fairways seemed to be well placed but were small or odd shaped enough not to prove to be difficult. The greens were guarded but again weren't difficult to reach safely because of the medium size. Before I forget there were loudspeaker announcements at holes # 3 and #9 but unfortunately they seemed too distorted for me to understand them fully.

He still has a way to go in learning the 'niceties' of the APCD, his course looked 'crude' in many areas but overall it's to a certain extent, playable. What do I mean by that, it's not an imaginative course, the holes aren't anything we haven't seen before and the entire course isn't a difficult one to play unless you use very harsh conditions. With the size of the download I wouldn't recommend this for dial-up players and for all others.well it's something else to try. You wont be completely 'turned off' by the course but a keeper, no. I'd like to see him try again but the next time he should have it beta tested if he is serious about being a better designer, if not.have fun and produce them a little smaller in download size for all to try.

Reviewer Note:
I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
