LINKS CORNER REVIEW

In a very bloated nutshell, Lake Crossing is a 54MB, par-72 mountain course by Edvin Kristoffersen featuring 5 sets of tees (7,963; 7,659; 7,356; 7,053; and 6,751 -- although the read me says 7,319). There are hole previews included but they are just aerial views of the greens and provide no useful information. Also included: cameo, splash screen, custom flags. I like the splash screen. It's the best part of the course.

Because the designer appears to have put roughly 10 minutes into this, I promised myself I would not spend more than 9 on this review. The course is pretty poor and, when you consider that it is more than 50MB, it is really poor. I frankly cannot figure out how in the heck the file got so big, because there is nothing significant in this course. I am not sure I even saw a 3D object. Most of the plantings are cloned. The textures are standard and poorly used. Perhaps Edvin put a large number of 3D objects in and deleted them. But it does not matter. This could be a 1MB file and I would still suggest skipping it. It is boring, repetitive, and generally not fun at all.

I do not mean to be overly harsh but, at this point in the evolution of user-designed courses with the APCD, with all the tutorials out there, all the great courses released to use as models, and all the posts and beta help available here an elsewhere, it seems a shame to release such a course. To sit here and critique with detail the playability, appearance, textures, and layout (as I normally do in a review) would be a waste of everyone's time. Not only is there a parade of technical errors but the layout is dreadful. The course opens with 4 almost identical par 3s (holes 1-4), followed by 10 almost identical par 4s (holes 5-14) and closes with 4 almost identical par 5s (holes 15-18). No creativity whatsoever.

This is Edvin's second effort with the APCD. His other course (Hilltop G.C.) was released the same day as this one. Perhaps that one is better. Maybe if Edvin had focused on one course rather than two, we might have received one decent one. I would suggest that he take some time to acquaint himself with the numerous tutorials and free help at Links Corner. I am confident that he, like anyone, can learn to use this tool with some effort and thought.

The screenshots at right are different holes -- I swear. Sorry I only included 2 . . . but my 9 minutes are up.

This course is available as a FREE download.
