This fictional parkland course has been available for some time and is the first and only design by Steve that I am aware of.
The course is made up of stock objects and terrains and your view from the first tee and as you continue your round you can see there is bags of potential on offer here and in fact this is a very nicely designed course in its own right although it does have its flaws which I will come to.
The view from the overhead shows that hazards such as bunkers and areas like the greens are a little un-smooth and lack some finesse, the bunkers although well placed are a flat and lacking in texture and not finished off around the lips although the attempt has been made to do this but not quite got there.
The same can be said for the water on the course, again positioned well, and edged off, but not quite right.
The fairways slope and undulate well but there are pulled verts and no cut or strip between the fairway and the rough.
What I am trying to get at here is that this course has all the right elements to be excellent and for a first release has to be commended, everything has been carefully planned from the layout to the planting to the placement of hazards but in each area it just fails to deliver.
I am not aware what new projects Steve is undertaking; I feel that he must have improved considerably since this and I anticipate his next release to be quite something if he has got to grips with the finer points of the APCD.
I am only sorry this review is so late after its release and that the lack of feedback hasn't deterred someone who, in my opinion, has the talent and ideas to produce some stunning courses, Hemby Bridge for one, will be well worth him re-visiting and polishing off.
Best Hole: There are numerous holes that this could go to but I have plumped for the very pretty par 3 15th with its lake to the right hand side and nice planting of trees and shrubs, a very nice hole.
Overall: A very nicely designed parkland course with great risk/reward holes and some careful planning required to get a good score.
As I have said above, there are flaws in most areas and you get the feeling of 'if only' as you go around the course and I am sure with more experience and a re-think this course could be right up there, it certainly has all the right ingredients.
I will look with interest for news on your next design Steve and hope you prove me right.
