LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' June 2003

This is the third course by this designer in 4 months, the first two were Porcupine Lakes and Ghost Echo at Séance Chambers, and both were playable but needed work. This seems to be the best of the three but needs work also. The tee areas have a nice but not spectacular texture and at times had different 'properties' outside of them, rock fields, jungle, buttercups.you get the idea. The fairways were checkerboard with a fringe, quite flat without a discernible slope towards the ocean. The greens were nicely textured with a generous fringe. The planting, since this was a tropical course, was primarily palms of different types and heights thus avoiding the look of repetitive planting while doing it. Mixed in were red birds of paradise, brush in the waterways either cris crossing the course or just being large bodies of water serving as hazards. The fairways were nice sized and at times were unguarded but for the most part had a hazard of water or bunkers that usually didn't have any lips and did have some sharp edges. The greens were small and like the fairways varied in the degree of being guarded, their size seemed to be hazard enough, this is where the generous fringe came in handy. Very nice chipping on this course. The many bridges that he used all seemed to be placed well but were oversized in comparison to their surroundings. He likes to use sounds in his courses and this one wasn't an exception, on hole # 7 he has to slow up the airplane loop, it sounded as if a plane was taking off every second. Some sage advice from an old man, don't move into the lighthouse on hole # 6, it's hanging half off it's foundation over the ocean. If memory serves me right I seemed to have bought a timeshare in that many years ago in Bolivia.oh well.

The majority of holes have very little variation in elevation, but a few have a nice drop or climb to make it interesting. His elevations and caddie seemed to be very good. On hole # 11 a par 4, 401y, you have your choice of fairways and thusly your choice of a driver or a 3w. A nice idea for a risk/reward type hole but avoid looking at the rather ugly rims around the tee boxes. On hole # 13 par 4, 343y, he put a grouping of palm trees directly in front of the tee box, I had to use a flop driver and then I was fortunate enough to find a clearing in the palms. Did I miss something or is a poorly designed hole. The point of this escapes me. Hole # 17 a par 4, 431y, you again have a choice of clubs off the tee, I chose to 'go long', that at the time seemed to me to be the 'fun' thing to do, yes it is and this hole alone is worth the download. The putting was fairly easy, getting to the green was the trick.

While the APCD work on this course isn't going to win it any awards it's much better than his other courses. He has sharp edges, misplaced items (a tee marker out of the box in the rough) some floating trees, oversized bridges and a few ducks or swans that are too large. Looking at the course as a whole it's not bad looking at all. His work with and the color of the ocean were quite nice as were the plantings and the grass blends. The main problem with his courses is that he doesn't go back and beta test them himself, I shouldn't say that. He does check out the course after it's 'finished' but he doesn't repair all of the errors. This is what beta testers are for, the course would be much better looking and at times playing if it were fully checked and repaired. In it's present state it's a very playable and enjoyable course, full of imaginative holes (almost fantasy). Next time please use more 'top views' so there are more shadows, this shadow file is quite small. I think it's an excellent download especially for it's small size.
