LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' May 2003
The short version, this endeavor is much better than his first two courses, Glenfiddich, and Seven Oaks but around par with his last course Golf Club Ferragama. He again used the 2001 APCD for it instead of using the 1.5 for better textures. The tee boxes were nicely done; the mowed fairways didn't have a first cut, which would have looked nicer. The rough was pleasant enough and it led into an undergrowth, which he borrowed, from The Wyntoon Course, how did I know that, he didn't change the properties name when he used it. But I must say it did with its brown-green deep grass, brush, scrub, little yellow flowers and occasional rocks look quite nice. It didn't unfortunately detract enough from the duplicate trees that seem to overpopulate this course. Did they look terrible, not really they were a nice tree and heavily planted were acceptable. The greens were smooth with a fringe. The fairways were less than medium and in many places narrow, at times too narrow, especially at the landing areas. His bunker placement on the fairways was much better than in his last course and proved to be 'fun' in most cases, particularly on the par 5 holes. The greens were small and odd shaped, just the way I like them, not sloped just with slight breaks and well guarded by bunkers. On # 6 a par 3, 200y hole (for my pin placement) the green was completely surrounded by a huge bunker and he had a bridge crossing that bunker, no sand in your shoes, novel idea.you decide.
He constantly changes the elevation, sometimes just enough for a slight trajectory adjustment and other times I had to change clubs, along with most of the holes (not all) having some imaginative shapes he kept the course moving along. The caddie seemed to be working well throughout the course. His bunker work left something to be desired. At times they were lined with stone, how would you like to hit that when your only 5 feet away. Most of the bunkers were lined with rough, easy to do but not that attractive. On hole 11 there is an example of his poor bunker work, it had to be redone but it seems that once he finishes, good or bad, accept it. Unfortunately his APCD skills still need a 'fine tuning' and a beta tester. I was quite disappointed at the small shadow file, this is a simple item that makes a course look more realistic, we waited a long time for it and would like to see it used to its fullest potential, it does greatly enhance the course.
No read-me, cameo, poorly done splash, there are designers that are more than willing to tell him how to add the 'little' things that dress up a course and make it more professional looking. There are even some designers that will make them for him; he has to write his own read-me though. I called this a 'woodland course' but I did glimpse the ocean a few times, if it wasn't the ocean in the distance it was the mother of all water hazards. I included a screen shot that any beta tester would shudder over; it should be last in the column. After all of these negative remarks, well not all were negative just 'constructive', I think this is a good download and an enjoyable course to play. The APCD exceptions that I mention don't detract from the playability of the course and aren't running rampant throughout the course, I do grade on how a course plays not exactly on the 'looks' although a disaster wouldn't garner a top score, any way download it, play it, you will as I did enjoy the 'game', and that's what it's all about. Build more Mr. Larson; build more, but try a few improvements, you and we will enjoy them more.
Reviewer Note
I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
