LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' May 2003
If you check the scorecard you'll see that the yardage is backwards and sideways, the back tees are marked at 6336y, the middle at 6958y, and the forward at 6450y. There is one hole preview on the second hole, no others just one. In his rather short read-me he states that it only took him 70 hours to build this course.
The tee box is a smooth flat looking texture, the fairways are mowed, no fringe, they lead into a strip of dormant grass then into rough and the greens like the fairways have a knobby texture but are checkerboard with a fringe. The trees often repeated as easily seen on hole # 11 are a mixture fitting this supposedly 'strange haunted' course. Why say that, the course name and the unbelievably annoying sounds embedded in the course and in my mind. If you play with them on (which of course is the idea of embedded sounds) you'll want to rush through the course just to keep from being constantly distracted by the noise. The sounds are there so you don't notice that the APCD work is slipshod, sharp edges mostly at the greens, floating trees (the second screen shot) and even though they are few, the common looking bunkers. The fairways are ample in size and not very well guarded by either the water or the bunkers and the greens are a shade under medium. The greens have few bunkers that are true hazards but occasionally the water will come into play. The majority of greens have a slight over-slope, the rest are fairly flat.
The elevations do vary and you will find yourself using something less than your driver off the tees. A few blind holes will crop up but as a rule it isn't a very challenging course. I find that rims around tee boxes quite unattractive and this course tried every one in the book. On hole # 8 the rim was brick, on hole # 9, dry grass, on hole # 12, sod, on hole # 14, buttercups (yeah I know) and on holes # 16 and 17, rock.
There isn't much point in my writing a long drawn out review about a course that you most likely won't be downloading, unless you're a collector. The designer, as he states in his read-me, that he built it in 70 hours. I find it hard to believe that he spent so much time on it. Is it playable, definitely, would I want to play it again, no, and I can't see any reason for you to want to. It is poorly designed, not imaginative in its hole designs and the sounds.enough said about them. His last course (Porcupine Lakes) had sounds that some of the players found 'objectionable' but for a different reason. Why, since he knows how to use the APCD effectively enough to build two 'playable' courses won't he spend more time, ask advice in the designers corner, have it beta tested and put out a course that can be accepted by more players. If this is just a hobby for him, building courses and then, even though they are far from perfect, generously giving to everyone, fine but I hope that he doesn't expect them to be widely acclaimed. I imagine we'll see when his next course comes out if he's a serious designer or just enjoying himself. Whichever, more power to him, I can't design and would like to. This is a no download zone.
Reviewer Note
I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
