LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Simon Kent
February 2003
This was Chad Malone's first course as a designer and my first as a reviewer. Woodbridge Country Club is a Par 72, Fictional/Woodland Course that plays exactly as you see it.
Playability: I shot -16 (56), with 100% Fairways in Regulation, 88% Greens in Regulation, with a total of 20 Putts. The reason the course was not difficult is because the holes were generally very straight, with the Par 5's being easily reached in 2 shots, and along with the bunkers and water not being placed in a way that would hurt you if you went too far over the green or hit the ball off the fairway, it generally was a very easy course to play.
The Course: Hole 6 was probably my favourite hole (Screenshot 2), Hole 12 was certainly the most scenic and well constructed (Screenshot 3), and Hole 14 confused me, due to its tight fairway for no apparent reason close to the green. Unfortunately the course lacked many things that people have grown accustom to when playing Links Golf. For instance there was no Tournament Option, Signs, Custom 3D Objects, and due to the lack of difficulty in playing at Woodbridge Country Club, it will not be a course I would play again.
The designer had no major flaws APCD wise that would affect the actual play of the game, but the creativity in the course design was really what needed to be concentrated on the most.
I did have fun on the course because I came close to a Hole-In-One on the 8th, but I would have really liked to see the designer put more thought into variation in shape of the holes, placement of bunkers, slopes in the green and basic seaming of textures.
Areas To Improve: A simple Bird Whistle, Wind etc, is much more appealing that just the 'crack' of a driver and adds to the experience when playing a round of Links Golf. So having sounds really would have helped raise the enjoyment level in this course. The seaming of water/rough/fringe/green textures needs to be improved and the water needs an 'edge' where it meets land, so it seems more realistic. The splash screen can make or break whether a player won't just quit as soon as they see it, because it should make the player look forward to the round. Finally to make the course 'look better', variation in trees and planting could have helped, rather than a multitude of the same type of trees up and down the fairway.
Recommendations: Creativity in Holes will directly lead to the course becoming more difficult. This can include simple things like elevation changes, slopes in the green, bunker placements that will hurt bad play, and water that will make people go for what I like to call 'hero' shots. To make the download more appealing, the designer should have definitely included a Read-Me File explaining why they made the course, hole descriptions etc, and possibly could have also included a Mode-of-Play, and some Saved Rounds/Shots.
Course Statistics: Links 2001 Course. Par 72, Fictional/Woodland, 2 Sets of Tees, Distance: 6348m-6640m, Par 3's- 4, Par 4's- 10, Par 5's- 4.
