LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
February 2003
This was the designer's first course and unfortunately it looked like it. The tee boxes were nicely done but some of the tee markers were in the boxes and some were out. The rough was a little matted looking, the fairways were mowed but didn't have a first cut and the checkerboard greens did have a fringe. His mixture of color for these blended well. For such a small download he had quite a bit of planting but part of that is explained by the repeating of many trees, surprisingly it was done well enough not to be too noticeable. The bunkers were poorly done, they were uneven and had sharp corners and the greens were elevated but they too were poorly done. On an overwhelming amount of the holes you had blind shots to the pin. That can be enjoyable a few times, very few, but to have it too often gets boring, the holes needed more, much more imagination. He loaded the fairways at many of the landing points with bunkers that too can be fun but not continually. When the doglegs were sharp they were sharp, you either had to lose your driver off the tee or take a chance and drive over the trees at an angle that was risky and blind. He did use some unusual elevations and the excellent caddie didn't go unnoticed. Hole # 14 had a very attractive water hazard of to one side that proved that if he took a little more time with the layout he could build a nice course. The greens were medium sized and fair putting, but watch out for the green on hole # 8.
I'm trying very hard not to sound cruel or critical without cause. He proved in some respects that he is capable of building a nice course but it takes time, patience and above all the ability to ask for help with the APCD, that's why good web boards have designer corners for help and beta testers that are more than willing to sharpen your course as they sharpen their skills. When anyone who has been downloading courses for a while will see a course that's this small they avoid it like the plague. Being such a small download is an immediate indicator that the course is like this one, missing all the 'niceties' of a true course and just has the basics. The name of the course is very telling and apropos. I wouldn't recommend this course to download unless your curiosity is peaked by the screen shots.
Reviewer Note
I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
