LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
January 2003
This won't be a long review, the course say's Harbor, for 13 holes I had it classified as a woodland course. Upon reaching hole # 14 I saw water and sand to the right of the hole, the water read 'ocean' that was the first and last time I saw it. Since there wasn't a read-me of any kind it will remain a woodland course. When classified 'F' that can mean fictional or fantasy, fictional would be a course that could actually exist, it looks and played as if it was an actual course somewhere. A fantasy course has unusually shaped holes and wouldn't exist on dry land, only in the mind of its inventor, the designer. Most times they can be fun to play. Most times! This is a fantasy course.
There were 3 tee boxes and one set of tees, the sometimes vertically, sometimes horizontally mowed fairway didn't have a first cut, the rough looked 'matted', and it had a mildly checkerboard green with a fringe. All were more than acceptable in color and blended well together. The heavily tree lined fairways would have looked better if he didn't occasionally repeat the same obvious tree. The course had bushes, boulders, bunkers, water hazards, a creek, rock fields and areas names 'forest' and 'wild-flower'. The fairways were medium-narrow and often snaked like fantasy courses have the habit of doing. The greens were medium and fairly easy with the exception of an amazingly poorly designed first green. Many of the greens were elevated.or I could say the were 'set up on bricks', not a pretty sight, but different. Most of the holes were blind, a novelty once or even three times, he excided the rule of three.most were blind and it grew old fast. While there was little change in elevation, by that I mean there weren't extreme changes, the caddie worked very well.
Even without being an expert with the APCD I could see the many, many egregious errors, sharp edges, bad bunkers, uneven greens, fairways. Why was this built in the 2003 APCD if he didn't want to take advantage of the excellent looking textures and above all the shadows, with a 1.11mb shadow file it hardly looked 2003. There are more and more tutorials available, the web-boards have designer corners where the other designers will not only give advise and information but they will even design something for you. I'm well aware that this is a first attempt but I have seen first attempts that are beautifully done and have been beta tested. The are many members that are willing to help with beta testing, please use all the help available to you. Can you play this course; yes with all of the blind shots you can have fun trying to cut across to lower your score. Would I recommend it, no, but if you want to just 'bang the ball on a different course every day' type course it certainly is a small download.
Reviewer Note
I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
